The ChatGPT mobile app is getting a significant upgrade. OpenAI announced on Wednesday that it is bringing voice-based agentic features to mobile, allowing users to trigger workflows like drafting documents or summarizing emails by speaking.
The rollout means you no longer need a desktop to hand off complex tasks. Your phone can now work as a genuine assistant, not just a chat window.
What Plus and Pro Users Can Do
For Plus and Pro subscribers, the ChatGPT mobile app now includes access to the Work tab. From there, users can:
Create a document
Draft an email
Summarize Slack messages
Build sites
Create presentations
Use the cloud browser
Access other areas such as finances
The Work tab turns the app into a task hub. You can start a workflow on your phone and let ChatGPT carry it through.
What Free and Go Users Get
Free and Go users are not left out entirely. These users will get to work with plugins and connected apps. That opens the door to extended functionality without a paid subscription, though the full Work tab experience remains reserved for Plus and Pro tiers.
Richer Voice Conversations
OpenAI said ChatGPT’s voice conversations will have richer text output. That matters because voice interactions have historically been thinner on detail than typed ones.
Plus, users will be able to switch between text and voice easily. You can speak a request, then move to typing without losing your place. You can also start working on a conversation on the go and resume it on desktop. This creates a seamless handoff between phone and computer.
Why Voice Is Becoming the Interface
The feature arrives as an increasing number of users are turning to voice to issue commands to AI assistants for complex tasks. Speaking is faster than typing for many people, especially when the request involves multiple steps.
In July, OpenAI launched its new conversational model GPT-Live. Later, the company integrated it with the desktop app to let users use their voice to complete tasks in the Work tab or build apps in the Codex tab. The new rollout brings similar capabilities to the ChatGPT mobile app.
Chat and Workspaces Stay Separate
Competition in the AI assistant space is intensifying. Recently, Anthropic made the handoff between mobile and desktop easier and also merged its Cowork and Chat interface.
OpenAI, however, is still keeping chat and workspaces separate. That is a deliberate design choice. The chat experience stays lightweight, while the Work tab handles heavier tasks. Whether users prefer that separation or a merged approach remains to be seen.
What This Means for Everyday Users
If you already pay for ChatGPT Plus or Pro, the update makes your phone a more capable work device. Drafting a document during a commute or summarizing a backlog of Slack messages by voice becomes practical rather than theoretical.
For Free and Go users, plugins and connected apps provide a taste of agentic functionality. The gap between tiers is clear, but the direction is the same. ChatGPT is moving from answering questions to completing tasks.
OpenAI’s move signals that voice-driven, agentic AI is no longer a desktop-only experience. By bringing the Work tab and richer voice output to mobile, the company is betting that people want to delegate work wherever they are.
The update is rolling out now for Plus and Pro users, with Free and Go users gaining plugin and connected app access. As voice commands become more common for complex tasks, the ChatGPT mobile app looks set to be the front door for that shift.
