Destro AI Robots: The Secret to Human-Robot Teamwork

Destro AI Robots Are Rewriting the Playbook

Destro AI robots are not built by a robotics company. That is the counterintuitive idea behind Destro, a startup that emerged from stealth with an $8 million seed round. Instead of designing new robot bodies, Destro built an intelligence layer that lets existing machines work effectively in logistics settings — and it also tells the human workers what to do.

The company’s founder, Manthan Pawar, puts it bluntly: most robotics companies start from engineers asking what cool things they can build. Destro started from the customer’s problem.

“A lot of robotics companies started from robotics engineers [asking,] ‘What cool things I can do?'” Pawar said. “One of the biggest reasons we are winning against robotics companies is because we are not a robotics company.”

That distinction matters. Pawar earned a master’s degree in robotics at NYU Tandon and has spent roughly eight years in the U.S. supply chain and robotics industry. His mindset is simple: know the customer’s problems deeply, and get to cash-flow positive. He says Destro is on pace to reach that milestone by the end of this year.

How Yusen Logistics Shaped the Solution

Richard Brunelle, director of automation for the American logistics group at Yusen Logistics, a South Korean shipping giant, helped point Destro in the right direction. Brunelle oversees automation across about 30 facilities in the U.S., where Yusen relies on fixed automation like conveyors and sorters while still piloting newer technology such as trailer-unloading robots and autonomous floor scrubbers.

Finding more ways to put that technology to work is Brunelle’s priority. Yusen’s U.K. subsidiary has built a fully autonomous facility, and a similar plan is now in the works in the U.S.

When Brunelle met Pawar, Destro was focused on picking and packing — sorting various goods into single packages. Brunelle realized his own challenge was fundamentally the same problem. His job involved cross-docking: unloading goods from one truck and sorting them into mixed loads for other trucks that make final delivery to customers.

“I asked whether Destro would be willing to adapt their solution to fit that cross-dock environment, because I don’t think anyone was doing that,” Brunelle said. “They went away, thought it through, and came back excited. They agreed nobody was addressing that space and that they could modify their tool to support it. Since then, they’ve gone all in.”

Inside the Pilot: Three Robots, One Operating System

Destro started with a pilot program at one Yusen facility in the Pacific Northwest. The setup used three cart-moving robots built by Miva Robotics and operated by Destro’s Vision operating system, which is based on open-weight vision-language-action models. These AI systems interpret camera images and instructions to control a robot’s movements.

Here is how the workflow operates:

  1. Human workers unload goods from one truck into different carts.

  2. The robots find the full loads and bring them to their destinations.

  3. The human, the cart, and the trucks are all directed by Destro’s Mothership operating system.

What makes this efficient, according to both Brunelle and Pawar, is that every element in the operation is coordinated by the same intelligence layer. Nothing is left to guesswork or paper trails.

“We make that operation less labor intensive, and we get away from the paper,” Brunelle said. “Everything is now systematic.”

That systematic approach proved decisive. Yusen also spoke with two other big-name robot startups in the space, and neither could fit into its workflow. One offered a robot that could move carts point to point but could not manage loading or unloading. The other came with fleet management tools but required a person to handle all the orchestration. Destro won because it could apply autonomous direction to the entire process.

Scaling Up: 26 Robots and a Southern California Pilot

The early results convinced Yusen to expand. Destro is now growing its initial pilot to a full deployment of 26 robots and launching another pilot with 17 robots at Yusen’s facility in Southern California.

Pawar plans to take this cross-dock loading workflow and “copy-paste” it across thousands of other warehouses that handle similar labor. That expansion plan convinced Base10 Partners and Bonfire Ventures to lead Destro’s seed round, with additional investment from CoFound Partners.

The opportunity is significant. Cross-docking is a labor-intensive process that depends on tight coordination between people, vehicles, and goods. If Destro can replicate its system across facilities, it could reduce the friction that has kept many logistics operations tethered to manual processes.

The Challenge Ahead: Dexterity and Manipulation

Destro may face a challenge with workflows that require more dexterity and manipulation. Generic robot bodies and open source models have not proven capable at these tasks yet. It is also unclear whether companies building foundation models, ultra-dexterous hands, or general-purpose humanoids will make those tools available to a company like Destro, or whether they will try to capture that business themselves.

Pawar remains confident that he has found the part of the stack where value will accrue — and that his company can take advantage of the research dollars pouring into new AI models and robot components.

“Robots are a platform. Every layer model is a platform. But we build a harness around it,” Pawar said. “That harness is just so complex and value-added that without that harness, these workflows are completely impossible, right?”

For now, competing with futuristic robot-builders is probably not an issue. Brunelle says he has yet to find a good use case for a bipedal humanoid robot, though he is evaluating a potential pilot with a wheeled humanoid.

“At the end of the day, we’re not putting automation into a building just because the technology is interesting,” Brunelle said. “It must solve a real operational problem. If it can make the operation more efficient, consistent, and flexible, that’s ultimately going to benefit our customers.”

Why the Non-Robot Robot Company Wins

Destro’s approach flips the usual robotics story. Instead of asking what a robot can do, the company asks what a warehouse needs done. That mindset produced an intelligence layer that coordinates humans, carts, and trucks — not just machines.

For logistics operators, the lesson is practical. The most valuable automation may not come from a new robot body at all. It may come from software that makes the robots you already have work in concert with the people around them.

Destro will make its case for the non-robot robot company at a major industry event in mid-October, where it will appear alongside other Startup Battlefield competitors. The company’s progress will be worth watching, especially as it pushes into more warehouses and tests whether its harness can handle the messier realities of logistics work.
