Roku Labs apps are officially here, and they mark a major shift in how the company approaches connected TV. On Thursday, the device maker unveiled the latest update to Roku OS, introducing a new experience called Roku Labs. This hub allows U.S. customers to access experimental apps made by the company. The Roku Labs apps are still in development, giving users an early look at what Roku is building next.

The move signals Roku’s growing investment in first-party software as it competes with other connected TV platforms that lean on AI assistants.

What Exactly Is Roku Labs?

Roku Labs is a dedicated hub accessible through a new tile on Roku’s Home Screen. It functions as a testing ground for experimental apps built in-house. U.S. users are the first to get access, and the initial lineup focuses on practical tools and entertainment.

The first Roku Labs apps include:

  • A weather tracking app

  • A stocks monitoring app

  • Roku Dash, a new game

Roku Dash lets users fly a UFO across “Roku City,” the company’s default screensaver featuring a neon purple and pink city skyline dotted with pop culture references and ads.

These additions suggest Roku is betting on monetizable first-party apps that place the company at the center of connected households.

Why Roku Is Pushing Experimental Apps

The connected TV space is crowded. Rivals have rolled out AI-powered products with voice assistants that handle more complex tasks. Roku’s answer is to build its own apps and test them directly with users through Roku Labs apps.

By keeping these apps in-house, Roku can gather feedback quickly and decide which ones deserve a full rollout. The strategy also opens the door to new revenue streams if any of the experimental apps gain traction.

Personalized Home Screen Expands to New Markets

Alongside the Roku Labs apps launch, Roku is bringing its newer, personalized Home Screen to new markets. Mexico and Brazil are first in line. Users there will see region-specific features, including localized content and tailored suggestions.

This expansion shows Roku is serious about growing internationally, not just in the U.S. Localization matters because viewers in different regions have different tastes and viewing habits.

Voice Assistant Gets Smarter

Roku’s Voice assistant is also getting an upgrade. It can now answer weather-related questions. This is a small but useful addition that makes the assistant more practical for daily use.

Instead of reaching for a phone to check the forecast, users can simply ask their TV. It is a convenience feature that fits naturally into the living room experience.

Bundled Streaming Subscriptions Arrive

On the streaming side, Roku is introducing bundled subscriptions in the U.S. and Mexico. These bundles let users mix and match streaming plans from smaller services.

The services included are:

  • AMC+

  • Fox ONE

  • Hallmark+

  • Howdy

  • Starz

Bundles are usually more affordable than buying each plan separately. For cord-cutters juggling multiple subscriptions, this could simplify both billing and budgeting. It also gives smaller services more visibility by grouping them together.

Roku LT OS Goes Open Source

In a move that could shake up the hardware side, Roku is open-sourcing the software that powers its remote, called Roku LT OS. This means outside developers and makers can build their own applications and devices using the same software.

Open-sourcing could lead to a wave of third-party Roku-compatible devices. It also builds goodwill with the developer community, which may create new experiences that benefit Roku users.

What This Means for Roku Users

For U.S. customers, the Roku Labs tile is the entry point for trying experimental apps before they go mainstream. The weather and stocks apps offer everyday utility. Roku Dash adds a fun, interactive element tied to the familiar Roku City screensaver.

Users in Mexico and Brazil get a more personalized Home Screen with content that matches their region. Bundled subscriptions in the U.S. and Mexico give viewers a cheaper way to access smaller streaming services.

Roku faces stiff competition from other connected TV platforms. By launching Roku Labs apps and opening up Roku LT OS, the company is placing bets on first-party innovation and community-driven development.

Whether these experimental apps become permanent or remain in testing depends on user feedback. For now, Roku Labs apps give U.S. users a front-row seat to what the company is experimenting with next.
