Databricks Buys Row Zero to Merge Spreadsheets With AI Agents

Databricks buys Row Zero, an early-stage spreadsheet startup, in a deal announced on Thursday. The acquisition brings a familiar spreadsheet interface into Databricks’ secure cloud platform, where AI agents and business analysts can work with the same data.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The move reflects a broader push by Databricks to keep acquiring startups in 2026, and leadership says more deals are on the way.

Why Databricks Bought Row Zero

The origin story is unusually practical. Databricks’ finance team had adopted Row Zero on its own because it was a cloud tool that could scale beyond 1 million live spreadsheet rows, a limit that frustrates heavy spreadsheet users.

The team was pairing Row Zero with Genie, Databricks’ homegrown AI agent. With Genie, users can ask complicated business questions of their data stored in Databricks systems using natural-language prompts, such as analyzing profit margins or checking the status of sales prospects.

When the executive team asked the finance team about the cloud tool they were using, a light bulb went off.

“Spreadsheets are one such interface that every business analyst loves. So it makes a lot of sense to intermarry Business Intelligence (BI), Agents, and Spreadsheets!” Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi posted on X about how the acquisition went down.

The Problem Row Zero Solves

Enterprise data often lives securely in Databricks’ cloud storage, but business users still want to explore it in a spreadsheet. Exporting that data into a traditional spreadsheet creates risk: the file can be shared around outside the secure environment.

By integrating Row Zero with Databricks, data can be manipulated in spreadsheet form and with familiar formulas while remaining secure. Analysts get the interface they already know, and IT keeps control of the underlying data.

  • Scalable rows: Row Zero handles datasets beyond 1 million live rows.

  • Natural-language queries: Genie lets users ask business questions in plain language.

  • Security by design: Data stays in Databricks rather than moving to unsecured files.

Who Built Row Zero

Row Zero was founded by former AWS and Tableau engineers, a background that fits neatly with Databricks’ enterprise data focus. The startup raised $10 million in May 2025, at an estimated $40 million valuation at the time, according to PitchBook.

That makes Row Zero a relatively early-stage company, which is notable given the size of its acquirer. Databricks closed another $5 billion in funding in August and hit $7 billion in annualized revenue run rate.

Databricks’ 2026 Acquisition Spree

The Row Zero deal is the latest in a busy year of shopping for Databricks. Ghodsi told TechCrunch, “We intend to do many more acquisitions like this in the future.”

Here is how 2026 has unfolded so far:

JunePantherAI security operations center startup, previously valued at $1.4 billion in 2021
Last monthElectricMakers of PGlite, a small, lite Postgres database useful for agents running locally on devices
SeptemberRow ZeroCloud spreadsheet that scales beyond 1 million rows

The pattern is clear: Databricks is buying capabilities that strengthen its AI agent ecosystem, its security posture, and the everyday tools business users rely on.

A Strategy Built Around Agents and Analysts

The Row Zero acquisition sits at the intersection of two priorities for Databricks. First, agents like Genie need interfaces humans actually want to use. Second, enterprises need those interfaces to be secure enough for sensitive data.

Spreadsheets are one of the most widely used business interfaces in the world. Rather than asking analysts to learn new business intelligence software, Databricks is bringing the spreadsheet to the data.

What This Means for Databricks Customers

For existing Databricks users, the acquisition hints at tighter integration between secure cloud storage, AI agents, and spreadsheet workflows. Finance teams that have already built processes around scalable spreadsheets may find those workflows easier to run inside the Databricks environment.

For the broader market, the deal is another signal that major data platforms are competing to own the layer where business users actually work. Owning the interface means owning the daily habit, not just the storage.

  • Less data movement: Analysts query data where it lives.

  • Familiar formulas: Teams keep using spreadsheet logic they already know.

  • Agent-ready workflows: Genie can answer questions against governed data.

Why Spreadsheets Still Matter in an AI Era

It is tempting to assume AI agents will replace the tools people already use. The Row Zero deal suggests the opposite: agents become more useful when they meet users inside familiar interfaces.

Databricks is not asking finance teams to abandon spreadsheets. It is asking them to keep the spreadsheet while the data stays governed, the AI agent handles the heavy questions, and the security team sleeps better at night.

Databricks buys Row Zero for reasons that started with its own finance team’s enthusiasm and ended with a strategic bet on spreadsheets as an interface for business intelligence and AI agents. With $7 billion in annualized revenue, $5 billion in fresh funding, and a stated appetite for more deals, Databricks looks positioned to keep acquiring in 2026.
