Google Photos virtual closet is now available to everyone

The Google Photos virtual closet is now live for users in the U.S., Brazil, and India, arriving on both iOS and Android devices. The AI-powered feature turns photos of your outfits into a digital wardrobe, an idea seemingly inspired by Cher’s iconic virtual closet app from the movie “Clueless.”

Google first announced the feature earlier this year, with plans to begin the rollout in the summer. Android users gained access first, starting in June, and now the Google Photos virtual closet is available to all Android and iOS users in the supported markets.

Why the “Clueless” comparison makes sense

The digital closet in “Clueless” was meant to highlight Cher’s privileged life. She had so many outfits that she needed a digital system to help her choose what to wear and keep everything organized. Now, you don’t have to be a rich Beverly Hills teenager to take advantage of such technology.

That’s the appeal of the Google Photos virtual closet. It takes a concept once played for laughs on screen and turns it into a practical tool anyone can use.

How the Google Photos virtual closet works

Instead of manually cataloging every item you own, Google uses AI technology to create a copy of your wardrobe based on the items you wore in your photos. The system identifies clothing and accessories you’ve already captured in pictures, then organizes them into a browsable collection.

From the app, you can filter items by category — like tops, bottoms, jewelry, and more — then mix and match them to create different outfits. It’s a simple way to plan looks without digging through your actual closet or guessing what pairs well together.

Google says the feature is designed to assist the user. The company also states that data about how you dress or what you wear is not being shared with third parties, like retailers. That privacy point matters for anyone hesitant about uploading personal style information.

What you can do inside the virtual closet

  • Browse your wardrobe by category, including tops, bottoms, and jewelry

  • Mix and match items to build complete outfits

  • Filter and sort pieces to find what you need quickly

  • Plan looks based on clothes you’ve already worn in photos

Other Google Photos updates rolling out now

The broader rollout of the Google Photos virtual closet arrives alongside a handful of other Google Photos updates. These additions touch editing, sharing, and creative tools across the app.

Gemini Spark for quick photo edits

One new feature lets you select, brighten, and share photos using a single prompt in Gemini Spark. Instead of tapping through multiple menus, you can describe what you want and let the AI handle the adjustment. The Gemini Spark feature requires a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription in the U.S.

An upgraded Markup tool

With Markup, you’ll be able to use a redacting pen to blur sensitive information like license plates. You also get access to precise thickness sliders for custom sketches and can pick from different fonts when adding text to photos. These changes make the tool more useful for both casual edits and privacy-focused touch-ups.

More Remix templates

Google is also adding more Remix templates that use AI to transform your photos. These templates give you new ways to restyle images without advanced editing skills.

New “Moods” filters for Android

For Android users, there are also new photo filters, called “Moods,” that let you give your images different looks. Options include 35mm film, 2000s digicam, and more. The filters lean into nostalgic aesthetics that have become popular across social media.

What the rollout means for users

The expansion of the Google Photos virtual closet marks a shift from limited testing to broad availability. Android users got early access starting in June, and iOS users in supported markets can now join them.

For anyone who has wanted a simpler way to organize outfits, the feature offers a low-effort entry point. You don’t need to photograph each item individually or build a catalog from scratch. The AI works with the photos you’ve already taken.

The privacy stance Google has taken may also ease concerns. By stating that style data isn’t shared with retailers, the company draws a line between personal wardrobe organization and commercial advertising.

Features like the Google Photos virtual closet show how AI is moving deeper into everyday apps. What once required a dedicated wardrobe app or manual spreadsheets can now happen automatically inside a photo library you already use.

Combined with the other updates — Gemini Spark prompts, the redacting pen in Markup, Remix templates, and Moods filters — Google Photos is positioning itself as more than storage. It’s becoming a place to edit, organize, and even plan parts of your daily life.

Whether the virtual closet becomes a staple or a novelty depends on how well the AI recognizes clothing across different photos. But for now, the feature is available, free to try, and open to anyone in the U.S., Brazil, and India with an iOS or Android device.
