Cerebras CEO AI Pushes Back on Doomsday Warnings

Cerebras CEO AI executive Andrew Feldman is not holding back. At a major tech conference, the co-founder and chief executive of Cerebras Systems made it clear that the AI doomsday narrative is hurting the industry more than it is helping. He even joked that “some of the leaders in the AI world maybe shouldn’t be allowed to talk in public.”

Feldman’s remarks came during a wide-ranging interview at the event, where he addressed the growing wave of negativity surrounding artificial intelligence. From fears about models breaking containment to insiders debating the percentage chance that AI may kill all of humanity by the end of the decade, the doomsday discourse has gone mainstream.

The debate has become so prevalent that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei was recently parodied in a skit on “Saturday Night Live,” where the fictional character summed up the discourse by saying, “We do not condone what we are doing.”

The Case for Optimism

Feldman believes the promise and potential of AI developments are being overlooked in the rush to warn about risks. He argues that AI leaders should spend more time telling people about the positive possibilities. One example he gave: a world where your grandkids will “never meet anybody who dies of cancer,” even if people still have legitimate concerns about AI risks.

It is worth noting that Feldman has a vested interest in AI being successful. Cerebras Systems’ customers include major names working with the technology, such as OpenAI, Block, Figma, pharmaceutical giant GSK, and Lovable. Yet despite this commercial stake, he remains pragmatic about weighing the trade-offs between risk and reward.

“I don’t think there are powerful technologies that don’t come with the challenge of ‘what happens when powerful technologies are in the hands of bad people?’ I think you can’t make one and not have the other,” Feldman said during his interview.

“I think what we have to say is that this technology is powerful,” he added. “We have to be thoughtful about it. We have to regulate it reasonably.”

Data Centers and Community Engagement

The Cerebras CEO AI also suggested that some of the negativity around AI stems from how the data center industry has approached the new buildouts created by AI demand. According to Feldman, the industry failed to engage with local communities properly in recent years.

“As an industry, we weren’t super good for the past few years at working with local communities, particularly in the U.S. We — the industry — didn’t do what others have done in the power industry in oil and gas. They didn’t work with the community. They didn’t engage the community as they should have, and that was a problem,” Feldman said.

He compared the NIMBY-ism — “not in my backyard!” — happening in the U.S. with other countries that are actively encouraging companies to build data centers. Feldman specifically named Brazil, Canada, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Mexico, and Sweden as markets where data center construction is being welcomed.

Efficiency and Future Demand

Feldman also addressed concerns that efficiency improvements might reduce demand for his company’s chips or those from other companies competing with Nvidia, as Cerebras does.

“We can do our job as hardware vendors to make our compute more efficient, and then the model makers can do improved work in making their models more efficient to achieve the same goals. All of this has to come together to make meaningful strides forward,” he noted.

This perspective suggests that rather than efficiency gains cannibalizing demand, they could actually accelerate progress across the entire AI ecosystem, benefiting both hardware vendors and model makers alike.

A Balanced Approach to AI Discourse

Feldman’s remarks highlight a growing tension within the AI industry. While some leaders focus heavily on existential risks and worst-case scenarios, others like the Cerebras CEO AI are calling for a more balanced conversation that acknowledges both the transformative potential and the genuine challenges.

The debate over how to discuss AI risks versus rewards is likely to continue as the technology becomes more integrated into daily life. What remains clear from Feldman’s comments is that he believes the industry has a responsibility to communicate not just what could go wrong, but also what could go remarkably right.
