Reach Capital Fund V represents the latest milestone for the 11-year-old San Francisco venture firm. The firm announced Tuesday the close of a $265 million fund to back founders building AI applications that can “expand human potential,” according to Tony Wan, head of platform at Reach Capital.

The investment thesis for Reach Capital Fund V focuses on three core areas: learning, health, and work. “We believe AI should serve human flourishing, not replace it,” Wan told TechCrunch. The firm’s previous investments include Replit, ClassDojo, and Coral Care.

Investment Strategy and Check Sizes

With Reach Capital Fund V, the firm plans to write checks between $1 million and $10 million. They will invest across pre-seed through Series A stages. Over the next three years, they expect to back roughly 50 companies through this fund. No companies have been backed through Reach Capital Fund V as of the announcement.

The new fund builds on the firm’s previous success. Reach Capital previously raised $215 million for Fund IV in 2023 and $165 million for Fund III in 2021.

Strong Limited Partner Support

Limited partners in Reach Capital Fund V include Capricorn Investment Group, the Los Angeles Fire and Police Pensions, the LEGO Foundation, and College Board.

General partner Jomayra Herrera said fundraising went smoothly and the team raised Reach Capital Fund V in less than six months. “The vast majority of our LPs doubled down, and we brought on a few new marquee LPs,” Herrera said. “We attribute this to LP interest in sector-focused boutique funds that focus on conviction-based investments.”

Market Context and Positioning

Reach Capital Fund V arrives at a notable time in the fundraising market. The broader market has taken a barbell shape in recent years, with capital flowing overwhelmingly to giant, brand-name funds on one end and to sharply focused specialists on the other. Generalist firms in the middle struggle to get LPs’ attention.

Analysis by PitchBook and the National Venture Capital Association found that established firms captured more than 90% of the roughly $62 billion raised across U.S. VC funds through May of this year. This leaves a smaller pool for first-time and mid-sized managers to compete for whatever’s left.

Reach Capital’s thesis, with over a decade of edtech and impact-investing experience, fits the mold of the kind of specialist fund LPs have remained open to funding. This context makes Reach Capital Fund V particularly noteworthy.

Portfolio and Recent Exits

Reach Capital’s previous investments include Replit, ClassDojo, and Coral Care. One of its most recent exits came in June, when Superhuman acquired GPTZero, the AI-detection startup co-founded by Princeton graduate Edward Tian.

Terms of the acquisition weren’t disclosed. However, GPTZero had grown to more than 19 million registered users and $30 million in annual recurring revenue on just $13.5 million raised. Reach Capital was one of several investors in the company, alongside Uncork Capital, Footwork, and Jack Altman’s Alt Capital.

About Reach Capital

Reach Capital is an 11-year-old San Francisco-based venture capital firm focused on education technology and impact investing. The firm backs founders building AI applications across learning, health, and work sectors.

Their approach emphasizes supporting human flourishing through technology rather than replacing human capabilities with AI. Reach Capital Fund V continues this mission with a larger pool of capital to support emerging AI founders.

What This Means for AI Founders

For AI founders building in learning, health, and work sectors, Reach Capital Fund V represents a significant opportunity. The firm’s $1 million to $10 million check sizes across pre-seed through Series A stages provide flexibility for early-stage companies.

The firm’s track record with investments like Replit, ClassDojo, and GPTZero demonstrates their ability to identify and support promising AI applications. Their focus on expanding human potential through AI aligns with growing interest in responsible AI development.
