Older iPhones Camera Feature Excluded by Apple

The older iPhones camera situation just got a lot clearer, and many users will not like the answer. Apple has quietly confirmed that its new Texture and Grain controls for Photographic Styles are not coming to older iPhones. The camera feature is limited to the latest iPhone 18 Pro models and the upcoming iPhone Duo, despite earlier wording from the company that suggested broader availability.

When Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max earlier this month, its press release said the new Texture and Grain controls would be “available in iOS 27 on iPhone models that support the latest generation of Photographic Styles.” That phrasing left many users expecting the feature to reach a wide range of devices.

The original wording is preserved in copies of Apple’s launch-day press release distributed through Business Wire and Notice Nearby. Separately, Apple’s User Guide for iOS 27 listed devices that support the “latest generation of Photographic Styles” as the iPhone 16 series, iPhone 17 series, iPhone Air, and iPhone 18 Pro models. That list pointed to broad compatibility across several generations.

Apple Changes Its Older iPhones Camera Statement

Apple has since revised the footnote on its iPhone 18 Pro announcement. It now states that Texture and Grain controls are available “only for photos captured on iPhone 18 Pro models and with the Ultra Wide, Main, and Center Stage cameras on the iPhone Duo.”

The company also states definitively in its iOS 27 User Guide that changing the texture of a photo can be achieved “on iPhone 18 Pro models.” This narrows the feature to the newest hardware only.

Whether Apple initially intended to bring the controls to older devices and then changed its plans is unclear. Apple has not commented on the revision. Either way, the original compatibility information appears to have been published in error.

What Are Photographic Styles?

Photographic Styles are tone presets that adjust the color and warmth of a photo while preserving skin tones. The new Texture and Grain controls would have allowed users to fine-tune the texture of their photos, adding a new layer of creative control to the older iPhones camera experience.

For those with an iPhone 18 Pro, a how-to guide is available to help users make the most of the feature. For everyone else, the controls simply will not appear.

Why This Decision Frustrates Users

The exclusion of older iPhones has sparked frustration among Apple customers. Many point out that the feature is essentially a filter, something third-party apps already offer. The deeper concern is the pattern of limiting minor software features to newer devices, even when older phones appear capable of running them.

One user commented, “Whilst it would be nice to have this, it’s only a filter. There are loads of apps that can offer similar. That doesn’t excuse the scummy practice that they always do, minor software features excluded for older phones capable of running those features, it’s a bad look and a bad feeling for the customers.”

Another added, “Apple sucks for not including this, they do it on purpose. Booooo.”

A third user noted, “I never use this stuff but it’s still a tacky, but typical move on Apple’s part. It’s getting boring.”

One commenter called it a “Pure upsell technique,” while another pointed out, “Exactly they sold you ‘super fast CPU’ and then artificially limit what you can do with it.”

Yet another user said, “Extremely disappointing. See no reason why it cannot be possible to have it on the 17 Pro models.”

What This Means for Older iPhones

For now, the Texture and Grain controls remain exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Duo. Owners of older iPhones, including the iPhone 17 Pro, will not have access to the feature.

Apple has not provided a technical explanation for the limitation or indicated whether it might change in a future iOS update. The company has also not addressed why the original press release suggested broader compatibility.

The Bigger Picture for Apple Users

This is not the first time Apple has restricted new camera features to its latest devices. The pattern has become familiar: announce a feature, suggest broad availability, then narrow it to the newest models. For users who invest in Apple’s ecosystem, the expectation is often that software features will flow down to older hardware, especially when the hardware is capable.

The Texture and Grain controls are a small feature in the grand scheme of iOS 27. But the way Apple handled the communication has left a sour taste. A quiet footnote change is not the same as a clear explanation.

For now, older iPhones will not receive this camera feature. Whether Apple reverses course or offers clarification remains to be seen.
