Home Hub Code Suggests Face-Based Profile Switching

Apple’s upcoming Apple Home Hub will support multiple user profiles with advanced identity verification, according to code discovered in the macOS Tahoe 26.7 update. The code reveals that the smart display will include “ambient sensing” capabilities to automatically recognize users and switch between profiles.

How the Apple Home Hub Will Handle User Profiles

The new home accessory will display Personal Content for different household members. Users will also have the option to manually select profiles through Control Center or the Settings app. Given the device’s expected operating system similarity to tvOS, these controls will likely mirror the profile selection interface found on Apple TV.

According to code strings discovered within the update, the Apple Home Hub appears capable of automatic profile switching. The system will use a combination of cameras and sensors to detect who is in the room. This aligns with earlier rumors suggesting the device would include presence-sensing technology to determine when someone is nearby.

Key Code Strings Found in the Update

The code includes several error messages and prompts related to identity verification, offering clear insight into how the system will function:

  • “Sorry, I’m not sure who you are. To access your Personal Content, you’ll need to select yourself in Control Center.”

  • “Before I can help with that, you’ll need to enable Personal Content. In the Settings app, tap on your name, and turn on Personal Content.”

  • “I’m not sure who’s speaking. Please come in front of this device and ask again.”

  • “Sorry, since this device hasn’t seen you in a while, you’ll need to ask again in front of the camera.”

  • “To access your Personal Content, you’ll need to select yourself in Control Center and temporarily allow ambient sensing to verify your identity.”

These prompts suggest the system prioritizes user privacy by requiring explicit permission for identity verification when accessing personal content.

Two Models: Wall-Mounted and Speaker Base

The code also confirms rumors that the Apple Home Hub will launch in two configurations. One version will mount on the wall, while the other will feature a speaker base. Both models are expected to include a square, 7-inch display.

Features and Rumored Release

The home hub will run apps and feature a main home screen with quick-access widgets. The device is expected to serve as a central command center for HomeKit devices and Apple services. Industry watchers anticipate an announcement as soon as September 2026.

User Expectations and Privacy Considerations

The ambient sensing feature raises interesting questions about user privacy and customization. While automatic profile switching offers convenience, users have expressed interest in control options. Some potential users want the ability for guests and children to control lights and HomeKit devices without accessing personal calendars, reminders, or other private information.

Privacy-conscious users may appreciate that the system requires users to position themselves in front of the camera for identity verification. This reduces the risk of accidental or unauthorized access to personal content.

The Road Ahead for Apple’s Smart Home Strategy

The Apple Home Hub represents Apple’s continued investment in the smart home market. By integrating advanced identity verification, the company aims to create a more personalized and secure experience for household members.

This feature set distinguishes the home hub from competitors while maintaining Apple’s focus on privacy and ease of use. As the rumored September announcement approaches, more details about pricing, availability, and additional features will likely emerge.
