iPad mini OLED Arrives With a Brighter Display
Apple announced a new iPad mini on Monday, and the biggest change is an 8.5-inch OLED display. The iPad mini OLED marks a significant upgrade over the previous generation, pairing a thinner, lighter design with the A20 Pro chip. The tablet starts at $699 for the Wi-Fi model and $849 for the Wi-Fi and cellular version.
The announcement comes just days before Apple’s “Pro and Tell” event, scheduled for Wednesday. The new iPad mini measures 5.4 mm in thickness and is available in two colors.
Display and Brightness
The Super Retina XDR display uses OLED technology for pixel-level lighting control. That means deeper blacks, richer contrast, and support for the P3 wide color gamut for more vibrant colors.
The screen delivers peak brightness of up to 1,200 nits, more than twice that of the previous-generation device. Full-screen brightness reaches 600 nits for both SDR and HDR content, with a 2 million:1 contrast ratio. Apple says the iPad mini is ideal for dim-light environments.
Apple is also offering a new nano-texture display option that reduces glare in bright environments — a feature already available on the iPad Pro.
Audio and Cameras
The iPad mini features an “Acoustic Display” that Apple says enhances audio when gaming, watching videos, or editing content. Specially designed woofers integrated into the display deliver deeper bass and higher volume for richer sound, according to the company.
A 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera handles video calls, and the tablet adds faster wireless and cellular connectivity plus fast-charge support.
A20 Pro Chip and AI Performance
Under the hood, the A20 Pro chip powers the new iPad mini. It features a 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators in each core, which Apple says enables up to 4.5-times faster AI performance than the previous generation.
The A20 Pro also includes a 6-core CPU, delivering up to 60% faster multithreaded performance for everyday tasks such as photo editing and multitasking across apps.
Apple Intelligence and Siri AI
The new iPad mini launches with the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. According to Apple, the assistant can draw on a user’s personal context to help them find what they need, answer questions, and understand what’s on their screen.

What the iPad mini OLED Means for Buyers
The iPad mini OLED brings several firsts to Apple’s smallest tablet. OLED contrast, a brighter display, and a nano-texture option previously reserved for the iPad Pro all arrive in a more portable package. The A20 Pro chip and expanded Apple Intelligence features also push it closer to Apple’s larger tablets in capability.
At $699, it sits well above entry-level iPad pricing, so buyers should weigh whether the compact size and OLED screen justify the cost. For anyone who prioritizes portability without sacrificing display quality, the iPad mini OLED is Apple’s most compelling small tablet yet.
The thinner, lighter build and fast-charge support add to the appeal for frequent travelers, while the 12-megapixel Center Stage camera makes the device a stronger option for video calls. With preorders opening October 28 and availability beginning November 6, buyers have a short window to decide which model fits their needs.
For people upgrading from an older iPad mini, the combination of OLED display technology, faster AI performance, and the next generation of Apple Intelligence makes this the most substantial refresh the lineup has seen in years.
