Fireflies Dictation Arrives on Mac and Windows
Fireflies dictation has officially arrived on the company’s desktop notetaking apps, bringing voice-to-text input to Mac and Windows users. The new feature, called Fireflies Talk, lets people dictate text into any application without switching between tools.
Fireflies is best known for AI-powered meeting notetaking. With Talk, the company is expanding beyond meetings into everyday writing tasks such as email, Slack messages, documents, and AI prompts.
How Fireflies Dictation Works
Fireflies dictation works much like other voice input tools on the market, but it is built directly into the desktop app that subscribers already use.
To start dictating, users press a simple keyboard shortcut:
Mac: Press the Fn key
Windows: Press Ctrl + Win
The shortcut works no matter which app is open. Fireflies records your voice and transcribes it neatly into the active text field. The tool also removes filler words and formats the text cleanly, so the output reads well without manual editing.
That means you can speak an email in your mail client, draft a message in Slack, or write a document without ever leaving the window you are working in.
Built Into Existing Subscription Plans
Fireflies has bundled dictation into its existing subscription plans rather than charging for it separately. This is a notable choice because it gives current subscribers immediate access to the feature at no additional cost.
The company has taken a different route from some competitors in the voice AI space. Some dictation-first tools have moved in the opposite direction by offering meeting notetaking for free to their existing dictation users. Fireflies, by contrast, is adding dictation on top of an already established notetaking product.
According to Fireflies, the company does not keep any recordings. Dictation transcripts are stored locally on the user’s device rather than on its servers.
Why Fireflies Is Moving Beyond Meetings
Fireflies CEO Krish Ramineni explained the thinking behind the expansion in an email to TechCrunch.
“People speak roughly 3x faster than they type, and voice is a much more natural way to get work done. Meetings were just the starting point; the bigger vision has always been Fred as your AI teammate throughout the day. Talk takes Fireflies beyond meetings into email, Slack, docs, prompts, and wherever else you work.”
That quote points to a broader strategy. Fireflies wants its AI assistant, Fred, to support users throughout the workday rather than only during scheduled calls. Fireflies dictation is the bridge that carries the assistant from the meeting room into the rest of the workday.
A Growing Push Toward Workflow Automation
Fireflies is not stopping at dictation. Like other meeting notetakers and productivity suites, the company aims to automate workflows using meeting transcriptions and the context it builds about each user.
The company has already taken steps in that direction:
Mini-apps: Last year, Fireflies introduced mini-apps designed to extract insights from meetings in different ways.
Inbox management: Last month, it launched a feature that helps users manage their inbox and draft emails on their behalf.
Assistant plans: Fireflies says it plans to build an assistant that taps into the context it gathers.
Together, these moves suggest Fireflies sees itself as more than a meeting recorder. The company is positioning itself as a full productivity layer that works across the tools people already use.
What Fireflies Dictation Means for Users
For existing Fireflies subscribers, Fireflies dictation arrives at no extra cost. That makes it easy to try without committing to another subscription. Anyone who writes frequently, whether in email, chat, or documents, could benefit from speaking instead of typing.
The feature also highlights a larger trend in voice AI. Meeting notetaking and dictation were once separate categories. Now, companies in both spaces are converging, each adding the other’s core capability.
Voice Input in the Workplace
Dictation has become one of the most practical consumer applications of voice AI. Instead of typing every word, users speak naturally and let software handle the cleanup. Filler words disappear, punctuation is added, and the final text is ready to send or save.
For people who write slowly or deal with repetitive strain, this can be a meaningful change in how they work. Speaking is often faster than typing, and it frees the hands for other tasks.
Fireflies is betting that this habit will carry over from personal use into professional workflows. By placing dictation inside a tool that already records and summarizes meetings, the company keeps users inside one ecosystem for both voice input and meeting intelligence.
Availability
Fireflies Talk is available now on the Mac and Windows desktop apps. Existing subscribers can use Fireflies dictation as part of their current plan, with transcripts stored locally and no recordings retained by the company.
