ChatGPT plugins are getting a major upgrade. At its Dev Day presentation on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, OpenAI announced that developers can now build app-like experiences inside ChatGPT using plugin extensions. The move shows OpenAI isn’t only targeting productivity software — it’s going after any application that works better when integrated with ChatGPT.
What ChatGPT Plugins Already Do
Plugins themselves are not new. OpenAI already supports them as connectors that link ChatGPT to everyday tools like Slack, SharePoint, Airtable, and Google Drive.
What’s changing is where those plugins live and how they work. Instead of acting only as connectors that pull data into a chat, plugins can now occupy a dedicated home in the ChatGPT sidebar. That means users can move between a conversation and their tools without leaving the interface.
The logic behind the shift is straightforward: if an application performs better when it’s woven into ChatGPT, OpenAI wants developers to build it there.
App-Like Panels and File Viewers
The centerpiece of the update is interactive panels. Developers can build interfaces that let users work with their tools while they’re still chatting with ChatGPT.
Rather than switching between browser tabs, a user can open a panel, complete a task, and continue the conversation in the same place. This experience can also include file viewers that support whatever file formats a developer’s product uses. A plugin is therefore not limited to text or structured data — it can display and handle the files a tool actually works with.
Easier Plugin Creation for Developers
OpenAI is also lowering the barrier to entry. A new Plugin Creator tool handles the building process, so developers don’t have to start from scratch.
Once a plugin is ready, developers can submit it to the plugin directory through a redesigned flow that offers clearer feedback. That feedback reduces the guesswork involved in getting a plugin approved and helps developers fix problems before they resubmit.
Better Discovery for End Users
Building a plugin is only half the challenge. OpenAI says it has improved how plugins are ranked and recommended within its directory, as well as when they appear in conversations.
For end users, that means more relevant suggestions at the moment they need them. For developers, it means better odds that a well-built plugin gets found. Access is also more granular: when users choose a plugin to work with, they can approve its access needs individually rather than granting blanket permissions.
ChatGPT Sites Can Host Plugins
ChatGPT Sites — the lightweight websites users can build with ChatGPT — can host these plugins too. For example, someone could share their apps with colleagues, who can then use them with their own connected data and permissions.
That detail matters for teams. A plugin built for one workflow can be distributed inside an organization without every user connecting the same accounts or inheriting the same access rights.
Automations and MCP Events Support
OpenAI also said it is adding support for the proposed MCP Events specification. This would allow plugins to start automations based on events in a connected app. A plugin could react when something changes elsewhere, rather than waiting for a user to ask.
The company is making automations easier to add and manage as well. Combined with event-driven triggers, this points toward ChatGPT acting less like a chat window and more like a hub that responds to what’s happening across a user’s tools.
What This Means for the ChatGPT Platform
The throughline across these announcements is platform ambition. OpenAI is inviting developers to treat ChatGPT as a place to build, not just a place to chat.
Sidebar placement, interactive panels, file viewers, directory improvements, and event-driven automations all serve the same goal: making ChatGPT the surface where work happens. For developers, the opportunity is distribution. For users, the benefit is fewer context switches. For OpenAI, the strategy is clear — own the layer where apps and AI meet.
OpenAI has not shared pricing, availability dates, or regional rollout details for these features. What it has confirmed is the direction: ChatGPT plugins are becoming apps, and ChatGPT is becoming their home.
