Xteink X3 Review: Tiny E-Reader Stops Doomscrolling

Love at first sight doesn’t happen often with gadgets. But when my Xteink X3 review unit arrived, it felt like finally discovering something I didn’t even know I was searching for. This tiny, MagSafe-compatible e-ink reader attaches to my iPhone like a Pop Socket, promising a cure for the endless scroll.

The promise was intoxicating. This Xteink X3 review would determine if an $80 device could break my social media trance. I read at least 50 books a year—brag—but the time I spend on TikTok and Instagram dwarfs those literary hours. Less social media means less anxiety, yet the apps keep calling. What if flipping my phone over revealed a Kindle-like screen instead of another notification? Could this gadget actually work for me?

Since I first started testing this Xteink X3 review unit, Xteink has released the X4 Pro with a touchscreen and front light for $99. My original X3 now sells for $69 on Amazon.

First Impressions: Size and Design

Reading books on my phone invites constant temptation. One notification and the fictional world shatters, replaced by presidential threats or viral videos. Real books and dedicated e-readers offer escape, but carrying a Kindle isn’t always practical for someone like me who’s always on the go.

My X3 arrived after obsessive tracking refreshes. Despite carefully comparing dimensions to my iPhone 16 and my Pop Socket wallet, concerns lingered about fit. The older X4 model only worked with larger Pro Max phones. But my X3 attached magnetically like it was custom-made, sitting flush against my phone without covering the camera.

Real-World Testing and Portability

My X3 arrived two hours before I had to leave for a Phillies game, so I rushed to load “The Power Broker” for a humorous stadium photo op.

For days afterward, I carried my X3 on the back of my phone. This created some wallet anxiety since I’m used to having a Pop Socket wallet. But I found I used the X3 just as much when I carried it separately in my purse or pocket. I’m still deciding whether to keep this setup or switch back to a real wallet so I can keep the e-reader attached. For now, carrying it separately feels most natural.

The included magnetic case, priced at just $9, protects the screen and improves grip. I’d recommend getting one. Though attaching the phone through the case feels slightly less secure than using the bare device.

Does It Actually Help Me Read More?

Over my two weeks of testing, I did find the X3 helped me read more. Waiting in line or for the bus became reading opportunities instead of scrolling sessions. The 3.7-inch screen proved surprisingly comfortable for my eyes during extended reading.

But buying the device wasn’t a magic solution. I had to remember to actually use it. The compact size means hundreds of books fit in my pocket, making reading the path of least resistance—if I choose it.

My Experience with the Firmware

My Xteink X3 review reveals a device almost perfect, held back by clunky firmware. The out-of-box experience works but lacks intuitive polish. I expected this, since the Xteink Reddit community was buzzing about CrossPoint, a free, open-source alternative.

Downloading CrossPoint seemed intimidating for someone who writes words, not code. But the website instructions and a few YouTube videos made installation manageable. I hit some initial confusion when I downloaded X4 firmware for my X3 by mistake—my bad. You probably won’t even need those YouTube videos if you follow the instructions carefully.

Charging and File Transfer

My X3 lacks USB-C, unlike the newer X4. Instead, a magnetic charger handles power. Yes, it’s annoying to have yet another dedicated cable. But after two weeks of consistent use, my battery dropped from 100% to 96%, meaning I rarely need to charge anyway.

Adding books doesn’t require the cable either. Wi-Fi file transfers from my phone or computer work, though the process isn’t exactly user-friendly. Still, I figured it out without Googling anything.

The Library Compatibility Issue

My Xteink X3 review must address the elephant in the room: Libby doesn’t work here. Library e-books use protected .epub files that won’t transfer legally, and Amazon purchases won’t load either thanks to DRM restrictions. This feels like a drawback, yet it’s also strangely refreshing—a “dumb” device with no apps, no touchscreen, and no distractions in an era of AI-everything.

Finding Content for My X3

Public domain classics offer an endless free library. I’ve finally started “Pride and Prejudice.” Charity bundles from authors like Charlie Jane Anders and Annalee Newitz gave me entire .epub catalogs. Calibre, a free program, converts online articles into .epubs. Content exists; I just have to approach it differently than I do with my Kindle.

Did my Xteink X3 review prove this device can fix my relationship with social media? Not entirely. No gadget offers salvation without effort. Reading more classic novels and spending less time on social media requires conscious choices from me.

But meeting the X3 halfway has yielded real benefits. Less brain rot, more books. And for $69, that tradeoff feels worth making.
