Xiaomi Foldable iPhone Rival Arrives Before Apple Event

Xiaomi has officially announced the 18 Fold, its first wide-format foldable smartphone, at a product event in China. The announcement comes just two days before Apple is expected to unveil its own first foldable iPhone at a September 9 event at Apple Park. This marks the first time Xiaomi has positioned a device as a direct competitor to an upcoming Apple product before its official release.

The Xiaomi foldable iPhone rival uses a wide-folding design similar to the Samsung Z Fold8 and Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone. It features a 5.38-inch outer display and a 7.58-inch inner display, both with 120Hz LTPO technology and 4000 nits of peak brightness. The display is protected by a new double-layer ultra-thin glass structure that Xiaomi claims improves durability over previous foldable displays.

Xiaomi 18 Fold Specs and Design

The Xiaomi foldable iPhone rival folds around a redesigned hinge the company calls the “Dragon Bone” hinge. Xiaomi says the hinge underwent 492 structural optimizations, resulting in a noticeably more rounded design than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8. The device launches in four finishes, including a Nishino Red colorway and a limited Ceramic Special Edition capped at just 1,500 units.

The 18 Fold is the first flagship device to contain Xiaomi’s in-house Xring O3 chip. This chip is built using a 3nm process with a 10-core CPU clocked to 4.35GHz and a 16-core GPU. According to Xiaomi, the chip delivers a 60% multi-core CPU gain and an 85% GPU performance gain over its predecessor. Power draw is down 25% for the CPU and 64% for the GPU, with a dedicated NPU rated at 200 TOPS for AI processing.

The rear camera system was developed with Leica and is led by a 200-megapixel main sensor. It also includes a 50-megapixel ultrawide and a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom. Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to feature only two rear cameras with no dedicated telephoto lens, which could give Xiaomi a significant advantage for photography enthusiasts.

Software and Battery Performance

The device ships with Xiaomi’s HyperOS 4 software and a large 6,000mAh battery. Charging speeds are impressive at 67W wired and 50W wireless. Pricing starts at 10,999 yuan, approximately $1,638, for the base 12GB RAM and 256GB storage configuration. The top-tier 16GB/1TB model is priced at 14,999 yuan, roughly $2,235. The limited Ceramic Special Edition is priced at 15,999 yuan, or about $2,384.

Xiaomi also introduced the Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro Max tablet at the event, which shares the Xring O3 chip. Additionally, the company announced three electric vehicles under its Pengcheng brand. The company has not announced global availability for the 18 Fold, and its earlier Mix Fold foldables have stayed exclusive to China.

Apple’s Foldable iPhone Expected at September 9 Event

Apple is set to hold its own event on September 9 at Apple Park, where the company is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. While Apple’s foldable iPhone Ultra has been the subject of extensive rumors, the device is not yet official. Apple’s foldable is widely expected to be priced above $2,000, positioning it as a premium alternative to Xiaomi’s offering.

The competition between Xiaomi and Apple in the foldable market is heating up, but availability remains a key differentiator. Xiaomi products are not available for purchase in the US market, which limits their direct competition with Apple in North America. However, global tech enthusiasts and investors continue to watch developments closely.

How the Xiaomi Foldable iPhone Rival Compares

Early comparisons suggest that the Xiaomi foldable iPhone rival may offer better camera specifications with its Leica-developed triple-lens system, a more powerful processor on paper, and a larger battery. The inclusion of a dedicated periscope telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom is a major advantage over Apple’s rumored dual-camera setup.

However, Apple’s advantage lies in its integrated ecosystem, software optimization, and global retail presence. The iPhone Fold is expected to offer seamless integration with iOS, macOS, and Apple’s services. Xiaomi’s device, while impressive in hardware specifications, lacks the international availability and software ecosystem that Apple delivers.

Is Xiaomi’s Foldable a True iPhone Competitor?

The Xiaomi foldable iPhone rival represents an ambitious entry into the premium foldable smartphone market. With a starting price of approximately $1,638, it undercuts the expected $2,000+ price point of Apple’s foldable iPhone. This pricing strategy could make it an attractive alternative for consumers in markets where Xiaomi is available.

The device’s 200-megapixel main camera and Leica collaboration give it a distinct edge in photography specifications. The 6,000mAh battery also surpasses what is typically expected from premium smartphones, potentially offering longer usage times than Apple’s upcoming device.

However, the Xiaomi foldable iPhone rival faces significant challenges. US consumers and international markets may not have immediate access to the device, as Xiaomi has not confirmed global availability. Apple’s ecosystem, including iCloud, Apple Pay, and seamless device integration, remains a powerful draw for existing iPhone users considering a foldable upgrade.

What to Expect From Apple’s Foldable iPhone

Apple’s foldable iPhone is expected to feature a premium design with MagSafe charging, though some features like under-display Face ID may not be ready at launch. Analysts predict Apple will focus on software optimization, ensuring apps work seamlessly across the foldable display. Apple’s approach typically prioritizes user experience over raw specifications, which could make the foldable iPhone feel more polished despite potentially lower camera specs.

The expected $2,000+ price tag suggests Apple is targeting the ultra-premium segment, competing directly with high-end foldables from Samsung and now Xiaomi. Apple’s event on September 9 will provide more details on pricing, availability, and features.

Final Thoughts on Xiaomi’s Foldable Launch

Xiaomi’s 18 Fold is an impressive entry into the foldable smartphone market. It represents the company’s first direct challenge to the premium foldable segment and positions itself against Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone. With its powerful processor, large battery, and Leica-developed camera system, the Xiaomi foldable iPhone rival is certainly a device worth watching.

However, limited availability outside China remains a significant barrier. For now, tech enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting Apple’s September 9 event to see how the foldable iPhone compares. Whether Xiaomi can truly compete with Apple on a global scale remains to be seen, but the 18 Fold shows that Xiaomi is serious about challenging the industry leader in the foldable market.
