Waymo has officially opened its robotaxi service in Las Vegas, marking a major milestone for autonomous ride-hailing in one of the most visited cities in the United States. The Alphabet-owned company began inviting public riders on a rolling basis on Monday, September 14, 2026, just weeks after receiving final approval from Nevada transportation regulators.

The launch makes Las Vegas Waymo’s 15th market, extending a robotaxi playbook the company has already followed in more than a dozen cities across the country. For travelers and locals alike, the arrival of Waymo robotaxi Las Vegas operations signals a new era for getting around the Strip and beyond.

How the Las Vegas Rollout Works

Waymo is starting small and scaling carefully. The company is deploying “dozens” of its new Ojai minivan robotaxis to serve an area of Las Vegas that includes the Strip south of Highway 589 and into Boulder Junction, according to a spokesperson.

For now, members of the public cannot simply hail a ride. They must request an invite and hope to receive an access code. This invitation-based approach mirrors how Waymo has introduced its service in other cities. Typically, the company opens the service up to everyone within a month or two of its official launch.

What Riders Can Expect

The Ojai minivan represents Waymo’s newest vehicle platform. While the initial fleet is limited, Waymo has said its fleet and service area will eventually scale. Early riders in Las Vegas will experience fully autonomous trips with no human driver behind the wheel, covering a defined geographic zone that includes some of the city’s most iconic corridors.

A Busy Few Weeks for Waymo

The Las Vegas launch caps a hectic period for Waymo as it races to expand across the United States and Europe. Earlier in September 2026, the company began offering its robotaxis to invited members of the public in Denver, San Diego, and Tampa.

Competitors such as Tesla and Zoox are also pushing to close the gap on Waymo’s lead in the autonomous vehicle space. Despite the competition, Waymo currently operates the largest commercial robotaxi network in the country.

Where Waymo Operates Now

With Las Vegas added to the map, Waymo now operates in:

  • Austin

  • Dallas

  • Houston

  • Las Vegas

  • Los Angeles

  • Miami

  • Nashville

  • Phoenix

  • San Francisco Bay Area

The company also launched, and then paused, service in San Antonio. Internationally, Waymo has been working to ramp up operations in Europe as well.

Nevada Approvals Open the Door

Waymo’s entry into Las Vegas follows approval by the Nevada Transportation Authority to operate commercial robotaxi services in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas. Tesla and Uber also received approval from the agency.

The permits allow for significant deployment over the next year:

CompanyMaximum Allowed Vehicles
Waymo1,000
Tesla5,000
Uber (with Motional and Zoox)1,000

Together, these permits would allow up to 7,000 robotaxis across Clark County over the next 12 months. However, it is unlikely that the three companies will reach those numbers.

Realistic Fleet Goals

Today, Waymo has a fleet of more than 4,000 robotaxis spread across more than a dozen cities. During a meeting in August 2026, Tesla’s Cybercab chief engineer Eric Early told state regulators that the company would be “extremely happy and satisfied if we could get ourselves up to 2,500, maybe a bit higher than that in the next year.”

Even without reaching the permitted maximums, the city could be saturated with robotaxis in the next year. Zoox is already operating a commercial service in Las Vegas, and Motional has also been planning to launch commercial robotaxi services in the city.

What This Means for Las Vegas Riders

The arrival of Waymo robotaxi Las Vegas service gives residents and visitors a new way to move around Clark County. The initial service area covers the Strip south of Highway 589 and into Boulder Junction, two areas that see heavy traffic from tourists and commuters alike.

For now, the invite-only system means only a limited number of riders will get access. But if Waymo follows its pattern from other cities, the service should open to the general public within a month or two.

The Bigger Picture

Waymo’s expansion into Las Vegas is part of a broader race to dominate the autonomous ride-hailing market. With Tesla, Zoox, and Motional all planning or operating services in the same city, Las Vegas is becoming a key battleground for robotaxi companies.

The outcome of this competition will shape how quickly autonomous vehicles become a normal part of daily life in American cities. For Waymo, the focus is on scaling safely and steadily while maintaining its lead.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did Waymo launch in Las Vegas?

Waymo began opening its robotaxi service to the public in Las Vegas on Monday, September 14, 2026, following final approval from Nevada transportation regulators.

Can anyone ride a Waymo in Las Vegas?

Not yet. Members of the public must request an invite and receive an access code. Waymo typically opens service to everyone within a month or two of launch.

How many robotaxis will operate in Clark County?

Permits allow up to 7,000 robotaxis across Clark County over the next 12 months, including up to 1,000 from Waymo, 5,000 from Tesla, and 1,000 from Uber through its partnerships with Motional and Zoox.

Where can Waymo robotaxis drive in Las Vegas?

The initial service area includes the Strip south of Highway 589 and into Boulder Junction. Waymo has said the service area will eventually scale.
