Uber doubles down on drone delivery with Zipline

Uber is making a major investment in drone delivery company Zipline as part of a new partnership aimed at transforming Uber Eats. The companies announced Monday that Zipline drones will begin making deliveries on the Uber Eats platform by the end of this year, with an ambitious goal of reaching one million deliveries per day by the end of 2029.

The Uber Zipline drone delivery partnership will initially launch in Zipline’s existing markets before expanding into dozens of U.S. cities. While the companies did not disclose the specific investment amount, the deal represents a significant commitment to drone delivery as a core component of Uber Eats’ future growth strategy.

Uber’s platform strategy for emerging tech

Uber has been steadily building out its drone delivery capabilities through multiple partnerships. This approach mirrors the strategy the ride-hail giant has adopted for robotaxis and other autonomous vehicle services — bringing as many companies onto its platform as possible rather than developing proprietary technology in-house.

This strategy has helped Uber maintain a leading position in emerging transportation technologies despite selling off its own internal programs, including Uber Elevate (its aerial ridesharing division) and the Uber Autonomous Technologies Group. The company has committed more than $10 billion to dozens of autonomous vehicle providers, using investments as a key tool to secure partnerships and shape the future of mobility.

However, Uber’s platform approach has faced challenges. The company recently clashed with Waymo, one of its highest-profile autonomous vehicle partners, and both companies are now expected to part ways when their contracts expire in 2028. The dispute also highlights an emerging rift over autonomous vehicle regulation, with Uber and Waymo taking opposing positions.

How Zipline drones will transform delivery times

Uber believes Zipline drone delivery can dramatically reduce delivery times, with the company targeting five to 10 minutes for drone-delivered orders through the Eats platform. “Truly quick commerce is proving to be an even bigger market than the original food market was,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi told The Wall Street Journal. “We think this can be an enormous tailwind for the next leg of growth for Eats.”

The partnership isn’t Uber’s first venture into drone delivery. The company previously tested the concept during the Elevate division era and returned to the idea late last year with a partnership with Israeli startup Flytrex, which also included a minor investment.

Zipline’s growing presence in delivery logistics

Zipline, based in San Francisco, recently closed an extended Series H funding round of $800 million, pushing its valuation to $7.6 billion. The startup has established itself as a leader in commercial drone delivery, having already completed tens of thousands of deliveries in various markets worldwide.

“Every great transportation revolution has changed where people live, how businesses operate, and how economies grow,” said Zipline co-founder Keller Cliffton. “Together with Uber, we’re taking the next step toward building a world where getting what you need is as fast and effortless as sending a text, no matter where you are.”

What the Uber-Zipline partnership means for consumers

For Uber Eats users, the Uber Zipline drone delivery partnership promises significantly faster delivery times and potentially lower costs as drone delivery scales. The companies aim to expand the service to dozens of U.S. cities, making on-demand drone delivery more accessible to a broader audience.

The partnership also signals a growing shift toward automated delivery solutions as companies seek to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and meet consumer expectations for faster service. With Uber targeting one million daily deliveries by 2029, the scale of this vision could fundamentally change how consumers receive food and other goods ordered through the platform.

Drone delivery’s role in the future of commerce

As Uber continues building out its drone delivery network through partnerships with Zipline and other companies like Flytrex, the competitive landscape for delivery services is likely to intensify. The company’s deep investment in autonomous technologies — now totaling more than $10 billion — positions it to remain at the forefront of these innovations despite the challenges inherent in developing and scaling new technologies.

While the Waymo experience demonstrates that Uber’s platform approach can create friction with partners, the company’s rapid expansion of drone delivery partnerships suggests it sees autonomous delivery as essential to its long-term growth. With Zipline’s proven technology and Uber’s vast logistics infrastructure, the partnership represents one of the most significant commercial drone delivery initiatives to date.

Deliveries are expected to begin by the end of 2026, marking the start of what could become a transformative shift in how consumers receive food, groceries, and other goods ordered through Uber Eats.
