Suno AI Models Replaced With New v6 Trained on Licensed Music

Suno AI models have entered a new era. On Wednesday, the AI music company unveiled a new model family called Suno v6, which it says was developed using licensed data from music labels and distributors such as Warner Music Group, BMG, and Believe. This release marks a major strategic shift for a startup that has spent much of its existence fighting copyright lawsuits.

The new Suno AI models are not trained on the data used for previous versions of its music-generating technology. That distinction matters, because record labels have accused the company of using copyrighted data to train its earlier systems. Suno settled with Warner Music Group last year and struck a deal with BMG last month, moves that appear to have paved the way for this licensed-data release.

Three Versions of the New Suno v6

Suno is releasing three versions of the model, giving users different levels of speed, control, and experimentation.

  1. Suno v6 – The base model, available to paying users. Suno describes it as reliable and steerable for controlled outputs.

  2. Suno v6 wild – An experimental model, also for paying users, designed for ideation and unexpected results.

  3. Suno v6 mini – A faster version available to all users.

With this lineup, the company plans to retire its older Suno AI models, pushing its entire user base toward the licensed-data generation.

What the New Suno AI Models Can Do

Suno says the new lineup offers greater flexibility in how people use it. Suno v6 lets you edit part of a song using a prompt or a single word in the lyrics. You can also use text, images, or video as references to create tracks, which opens new creative routes for producers and hobbyists alike.

Another notable feature: you can separate an instrument from a sample and build a new beat with it. That kind of stem-level control moves these Suno AI models closer to a production tool rather than a novelty generator.

Suno also plans to add remix features, but with a catch. Users will only be able to remix songs if the respective artists opt in to a new program Suno is setting up with music labels. That program would let the platform use artists’ songs for AI-generated features, giving rights holders a say in how their work is reused.

Revenue, Rights, and the Label Deals

Jack Brody, Suno’s chief product officer, framed the release as a way to create new income for the music ecosystem. “I think the music ecosystem and our partners are always looking for ways to create more revenue opportunities for their rights holders and artists. So a big part of this release is creating additional revenue streams there,” Brody told TechCrunch in an interview.

That logic explains why labels like Warner Music Group, BMG, and Believe agreed to license their catalogs. Through derivative works, Brody argues, there is more opportunity for revenue generation for all stakeholders, not just Suno itself.

The company is also tightening how its platform is used. Last month, Suno said it plans to add a watermark to songs generated using its platform. It also recently introduced new download limits based on an account’s tier.

Brody said these measures help address broader problems. “We can help manage some of the broader ecosystem challenges like streaming fraud and kind of mass exportation and uploading to distributors that are low intent. At the end of the day, we think it is up to the distributors and the platforms to govern what content goes on there,” he said.

Lawsuits Still Pile Up

The launch does not erase Suno’s legal troubles. The company still faces lawsuits from labels like Sony and Universal Music Group, from artists like Jason Isbell, and from users who allege it ignored security while chasing profits.

The timing of the announcement adds another layer of controversy. It came a day after the company admitted to training its models using YouTube videos, a disclosure that is likely to feature in the ongoing litigation. Even as Suno pivots to licensed data for its newest Suno AI models, the older training practices remain central to the cases against it.

Funding and What Comes Next

Despite the controversies, Suno has raised over $819 million in funding to date, according to PitchBook data. That figure suggests investors still see long-term potential in AI music generation, even as courts and labels pressure the company to change how it operates.

For now, the story of Suno AI models is one of transition. The v6 family represents a bet that licensed data, opt-in remixing, and watermarking can make AI music sustainable. Whether that bet pays off may depend less on the technology and more on how the remaining lawsuits resolve.
