Spotify Family Plan QR Code Could Cost You Premium Access

The Spotify Family plan QR code is part of a new verification system that could cost you Premium access if you don’t act quickly. The streaming service is now asking some Premium Family members to prove they live at the same address as the plan manager by scanning a QR code.

Sharing accounts with family and friends has long been one way to bring down the cost of subscriptions. I’ve done it. You may have as well. Streaming companies are all too aware this is going on, and they’ve made moves over the last few years to prevent folks from sharing their accounts too easily. Those include introducing family plans (even Strava has one now) and extra fees for people who don’t live with the primary account holder.

Now, Spotify is tightening the rules on people who share a Premium Family plan and don’t reside at the same address.

How the Spotify Family Plan Verification Works

Spotify said on a support page that it might ask Premium Family members to verify they live with the plan’s manager by scanning such a code. After Spotify makes that request via a notification, the user has seven days to complete their scan.

Otherwise, they may be locked out, and they can’t join another Family or Duo plan for a year. Alternatively, they can sign up for their own Premium plan. An individual subscription costs $13 per month, compared with $22 for a family plan, which covers up to six accounts.

Why the Spotify Family Plan Is Being Enforced

While some users are unsurprisingly not too happy about the QR code policy, it’s really just Spotify enforcing existing rules. Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström addressed the change on an earnings call on Thursday.

“This is not as much a crackdown as it is actually a routine improvement of our verification methods for our Family Plan. Family Plan has existed for a long while. It has been around for, I think it is now close to 12, 13 years in Spotify history, and it makes up a pretty significant proportion of our subscriber base,” Norström said.

“As such, it is important for us to just make sure over time that we improve the verification methods that we have. There are certainly ways, over time, to find holes around it. As that happens, we figure out how to improve it over time. This is not something that has an end date. This is not an implementation that is going to complete. This is just ongoing routine.”

Spotify Is Ahead of the Workarounds

The company has tried to prevent people from using screenshots as a workaround for QR code scans if family plan members aren’t living close to each other. Users have claimed that Spotify refreshes the codes every few seconds, but some suggested they were able to use video calls on additional devices to scan them remotely.

That cat-and-mouse dynamic is exactly what Norström described. Spotify closes a loophole, users find another, and the verification methods keep evolving.

What the Spotify Family Plan Change Means for You

If you’re on a Spotify Family plan and don’t live with the account manager, the QR code request is worth taking seriously. You have seven days to scan once you’re notified. Miss that window and you risk losing access — and you won’t be able to join another Family or Duo plan for a year.

For households that genuinely share an address, the process should be straightforward. For everyone else, the math is simple: an individual Premium plan runs $13 per month, while the Family plan costs $22 for up to six accounts.

It’s also worth noting that the Spotify Family plan covers up to six accounts, so splitting the cost among people at the same address remains one of the better deals in streaming. The difference now is that Spotify wants proof those people actually live together.

The Bottom Line on the Spotify Family Plan QR Code

Spotify’s message is clear. The Family plan isn’t going away, and neither is verification. The QR code check is now part of how the plan works, and it can arrive at any time via notification.

If you share a Spotify Family plan with people outside your household, you have a decision to make. Either sort out a verification arrangement that reflects your actual living situation, or budget for an individual plan. As Norström put it, this is ongoing routine — not a one-time purge. Expect the checks to keep coming, and expect Spotify to keep refining them.
