Rivian Announces CFO Departure

Rivian’s chief financial officer Claire McDonough is resigning her position at the end of October, the company announced in a regulatory filing Thursday. The news marks a significant leadership change for the electric vehicle manufacturer as it navigates a critical growth phase. The Rivian CFO leaving comes at a time when the company is scaling production of its R2 SUV and managing major partnerships.

The company stated McDonough is stepping down to “pursue a new opportunity and relocate to the East Coast to be closer to her family.” She has already been hired as CFO at Massachusetts-based GE Vernova, according to the energy equipment manufacturer and her own post on LinkedIn. The move represents a return to the East Coast for McDonough, who had been based in California during her tenure at Rivian.

No Disagreement Behind the Move

Rivian emphasized that her resignation is “not the result of any disagreement.” The company has already begun searching for a permanent replacement. Vice president of finance Derek Mulvey will serve as interim CFO once McDonough leaves her post at the end of October. The company’s regulatory filing provided few additional details about the transition timeline.

Her departure comes at a pivotal moment as Rivian undertakes some of its most ambitious projects to date, including scaling up production and sales of its R2 SUV, which started shipping to customers this summer. The R2 represents Rivian’s first mass-market vehicle, and its success is critical to the company’s long-term profitability goals.

McDonough’s Tenure at Rivian

McDonough was hired to the CFO spot in January 2021, replacing Ryan Green during a critical and tumultuous period for Rivian. The EV maker, still a private company at the time, had raised billions of dollars in its bid to bring three compelling electric vehicles to market: the flagship R1T truck, R1S SUV, and a commercial delivery van.

Rivian faced significant challenges during that period, including production delays, rising costs, supply chain constraints, and rapid capital consumption. McDonough stepped into the role as the company worked to overcome these hurdles and establish itself in the competitive EV market. Her financial expertise was seen as essential to guiding the company through its pre-IPO phase and beyond.

Key Achievements and the IPO

In her first year at Rivian, the company started production of its R1T truck and raised $12 billion in one of the biggest IPOs of the year. The company’s stock debuted at $78, though it has since fallen to $16.80 as of Thursday’s closing. The dramatic decline reflects broader challenges facing the EV industry, including increased competition and changing consumer demand.

McDonough became a key figure in Rivian’s quest to improve its balance sheet, specifically addressing its cost of revenue. While she didn’t have direct automotive industry experience—holding previous positions at JP Morgan and Fairway Market—McDonough was known for working closely with design and engineering teams as well as founder and CEO RJ Scaringe. Her ability to bridge financial strategy with product development made her a valuable asset to the executive team.

A Strategic Partnership with Volkswagen

As CFO, McDonough played a vital role in establishing a technology joint venture with Volkswagen Group. Under that deal, finalized in November 2024, VW agreed to invest up to $5.8 billion into Rivian by 2027 in exchange for access to its electrical architecture and software expertise. This partnership represented a significant validation of Rivian’s technology and provided crucial financial backing as the company continued to scale operations.

The Volkswagen joint venture has been one of the most significant developments in Rivian’s history, providing both capital and credibility. McDonough’s involvement in negotiating and structuring this deal demonstrated her strategic capabilities beyond traditional financial management.

McDonough’s Leadership and Responsibilities

According to insiders who spoke with TechCrunch, McDonough was instrumental in ensuring future vehicles were modern and compelling without losing money on every sale. Her responsibilities extended beyond traditional CFO duties to include corporate and business development, vehicle maintenance and repairs, facilities management, and oversight of Rivian’s charging network.

This broad portfolio reflected Rivian’s lean organizational structure and the trust McDonough had earned from the executive team. She was known for her hands-on approach and willingness to engage with technical teams to understand the engineering and design challenges facing the company.

A Farewell Message

“Together, we launched the R1T, R1S, and our commercial van, drove technology innovation and partnerships, built our go-to-market operations, and positioned the company for global scale and profitability with the launch of R2,” McDonough wrote in a post on LinkedIn.

“Being part of taking Rivian from an ambitious vision to a category-defining enterprise has been the highlight of my career.” Her statement reflects pride in what the company accomplished during her nearly six-year tenure, from a pre-revenue startup to a publicly traded EV manufacturer with multiple vehicles in production.

What This Means for Rivian

The Rivian CFO leaving creates both challenges and opportunities for the company. Rivian now faces the task of finding a new CFO who can continue the financial strategy McDonough helped establish. The company is in the midst of scaling R2 production and sales, a critical phase that requires strong financial leadership and careful capital management.

The incoming CFO will need to navigate Rivian’s ongoing efforts to improve profitability while maintaining the momentum built under McDonough’s tenure. The Volkswagen partnership continues to provide strategic and financial support, but the company still faces the pressures of competing in the increasingly crowded EV market. Rivian must also manage its cash position carefully as it invests in new vehicle development and manufacturing capacity.

With Derek Mulvey stepping in as interim CFO, Rivian has time to conduct a thorough search for a permanent replacement. Mulvey, who has served as vice president of finance, brings institutional knowledge and continuity during the transition period.

The company’s next financial leader will inherit a different landscape than McDonough encountered in 2021—one with established production, a growing customer base, and a major strategic partnership in place. However, challenges remain, including the need to achieve consistent profitability and navigate an increasingly competitive EV market. Industry observers will be watching closely to see who Rivian selects as its next CFO and how the transition affects the company’s strategic direction.

McDonough’s departure to GE Vernova, a company focused on energy transition technologies, suggests she remains committed to the sustainability sector even as she moves on from Rivian. Her experience at Rivian will likely serve her well in her new role, particularly as GE Vernova continues to expand its presence in the renewable energy market.
