A New Philosophy for the Creator Economy
Patreon CEO Jack Conte framed the update as a response to the failures of the modern internet. “The current version of the web is a failed promise for creators and fandoms,” Conte stated. He criticized social media for creating polarization and addiction, making it difficult for creators to build sustainable businesses. These new Patreon creator features aim to build a better alternative that prioritizes genuine community over fleeting engagement.
Short-Form Video with “Clips” and “Quips”
Recognizing the power of short-form video, Patreon is rolling out a new iOS feature called Clips. This tool allows creators to turn their longer videos into short, shareable clips suitable for platforms like TikTok, or to post natively as “Quips” on Patreon. This helps creators repurpose content and reach new audiences.
Preview Tools for Discovery
To help attract new subscribers, Patreon is testing new preview tools as part of their Patreon creator features:
Suggested Video Previews: Automatically pull the most engaging parts of paid videos to show to potential fans.
Quote Quips: Allow creators to quote snippets from longer written posts and share them as previews on the Home feed.
These features are designed to give fans a taste of exclusive content before they commit to a membership.
New Discovery Algorithm Highlights Smaller Creators
Patreon has significantly revamped its discovery algorithm. Previously, recommendations focused on finding creators similar to those users already liked, which favored larger accounts. The new system shifts focus to comparing posts by topic, craft, style, and theme. This change is intended to highlight smaller creators, giving them more visibility and a fairer chance to grow their audience.
Building Deeper Fandoms with “Niches” and Live Q&As
Patreon is introducing features to make its platform a true destination for fans, not just a payment processor.
Community Spaces (Niches)
A key Patreon creator feature is Niches, dedicated, topic-based communities built around specific interests, subcultures, or fandoms. This allows fans to discover creators focused on their passions without needing to search the entire site.
Fan Profiles and Live Interaction
Supporting these communities are new tools, including:
Fan Profiles: Allow fans to create their own profiles, which are currently in early testing.
Live Q&As: Creators can now host live Q&A sessions during their livestreams, fostering real-time interaction and deepening connections with their audience.
Enhanced Analytics and Insights
Understanding audience and earnings is crucial for creator businesses. Patreon is launching more granular analytics to support this.
Earnings and Membership Tracking
Earnings Tab: Breaks down earnings by tier and billing cadence, providing a clear view of revenue streams.
Membership Insights: Offers detailed member counts, including data on free trials, members in payment retry, and filters for trial, gift, active, and retrying statuses.
Financial Overview and Milestones
A revamped Payouts tab provides a complete record of earnings moving in and out of a creator’s account. Additionally, Patreon plans to add creator milestones, allowing users to celebrate key growth moments in their community’s development.
Support for 18+ Content Creators
In a significant move, native video and Quips are now rolling out to creators of adult (18+) content. This expands access to these new creative tools for a segment of the creator economy.
Future Security and Moderation Roadmap
Looking ahead, Patreon is developing security features to protect creators and their communities. The long-term roadmap includes:
Anti-AI scraping tools
Real-time spam detection
Expanded auto-moderation
Additional verification measures
What’s Next for Patreon
The full suite of Patreon creator features includes 30 new or revamped tools, some of which are still in early testing. Over the next few months, creators can expect to see many more changes arrive as Patreon continues its mission to build a better internet for creators and fans.
