Google is retiring its Gemini Gems skills system as we know it. The company has announced that Gems, the custom AI assistants inside the Gemini app, will be replaced by a new feature called “skills.” The change takes effect on November 17, 2026.

The good news for anyone who built a Gem is that nothing gets lost. Google will automatically migrate every Gem into the new skills format. Users do not need to rebuild anything or take any action. Until the switch date arrives, Gems remain fully usable in their current form.

Details about the transition are being shared inside the Gemini app itself, where a message informs users about the upcoming change. So what exactly is happening, and what does it mean for your custom assistants?

What Gemini Gems Were Meant to Do

Google launched Gems in 2024 as a way to let users teach Gemini to handle specific tasks without repeating instructions every time. A Gem worked like a saved set of directions that shaped how the AI responded to you.

Google offered several pre-made Gems, including:

  • A learning coach

  • A brainstorming assistant

  • A career guide

  • A coding partner

  • An editor

Users could also create their own Gems for personal needs. Popular examples included a running coach, a nutritionist, or a vacation planner. These custom assistants could be shared with other people, which Google hoped would help make its Gemini AI app more popular.

The concept was simple. Instead of re-explaining your preferences in every conversation, you built a Gem once and reused it whenever you needed that type of help.

Why Google Is Replacing Gems With Skills

The shift to skills reflects a broader change in how AI assistants are being designed. Rather than living as separate, standalone tools, features are increasingly being folded into a single conversational experience.

Google’s decision also fits a pattern that has become common with its products. Giving every new AI feature its own name, icon, and prominent placement in an app’s navigation can create confusion when those features later merge or disappear. Consolidating under one concept like skills reduces that clutter, even if users must relearn where things live.

As all-in-one AI agents gain traction, the idea of a unified assistant becomes more appealing. Skills can be applied across different AI tasks rather than existing in one dedicated space.

The Migration Timeline

The timeline is straightforward:

  1. Gems remain usable until November 17, 2026.

  2. On that date, Gems become skills.

  3. Google migrates existing Gems automatically.

  4. Users do not need to take any action to complete the transition.

If you have Gems you depend on, there is no urgent need to rebuild them. They will carry over in the new format.

How Skills Work Differently

Skills are not a perfect one-to-one replacement in terms of user experience. Google notes that to use a skill, you must type a forward slash (“/”) inside a task thread and then select the skill you want.

This interaction style is familiar to developers and power users who work with command-based interfaces. For casual users, though, it adds a step that simply typing a message to a chatbot does not require.

In other words, the former Gems still exist and still perform the same jobs. What changes is how you call them up during a conversation.

What This Means for Your Custom Assistants

If you built a Gem for a specific purpose, the practical impact is limited. Your assistant’s instructions and behavior should carry over into the skills format.

What may change is how often you use it. A skill you must invoke with a slash command may feel less natural than a Gem that appeared as a distinct option. For heavy users, that is a minor adjustment. For occasional users, it could mean the feature fades into the background.

Sharing is another consideration. Gems could be shared with others, which helped them spread. How sharing works under the skills system is less clear from the current notice, so users who depend on that function should watch for further updates from Google.

Tips for Preparing for the Transition

You do not need to do anything to keep your Gems working, but a little preparation can help you adjust smoothly.

  • Review your existing Gems and note which ones you actually use.

  • Confirm that each one still produces the results you expect.

  • Familiarize yourself with the slash command used to select skills.

  • Watch for additional details from Google as November 17 approaches.

If a Gem matters to your daily routine, testing it now gives you time to make adjustments before the format changes.

The Bigger Picture for Gemini Users

The retirement of Gems in favor of skills is a small change on its own, but it says something about where AI assistants are heading. Features are becoming less like separate apps and more like modes within one continuous conversation.

For Google, the bet is that simplicity wins. For users, the trade-off is a learning curve in exchange for a more unified experience. Whether skills feel like an upgrade will depend largely on how naturally the slash command fits into everyday use.

What is certain is the date. On November 17, 2026, Gems become skills, and the assistants users built will move forward under a new name.
