Analogue Returns to the 16-bit Era With New Consoles

Analogue is revisiting the console rivalry that defined the first half of the 1990s. On Friday, the company announced the Super Nt+ and Mega Sg+, updated versions of its Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis throwback consoles. Each costs $220, with shipping planned for December.

These new systems mark another return to the 16-bit era, following in the footsteps of Analogue’s original Super Nt (2018) and Mega Sg (2019). Like those earlier models, both are FPGA systems, which recreate the original hardware on a chip rather than emulating games in software.

The advantage is that you get lag-free 16-bit games on a modern TV — all without having to hunt down ROMs. But the flip side is you’ll need to bring your own original cartridges. Think of it like the gaming equivalent of a modern record player for your old vinyl collection.

What’s New in the Super Nt+ and Mega Sg+

The big hardware upgrade is wireless controller support. Both consoles now have built-in Bluetooth and 2.4GHz. There’s a dedicated pairing button for the gamepads of your choice, and you can power the systems on and off from the primary controller.

Wired controllers are still supported. However, no gamepads are included with the consoles, so you’ll want to factor that into the cost. 8BitDo’s retro-style M30 and SN30 controllers, which match the respective Sega and Nintendo aesthetics, cost $30 apiece.

Ports, Storage, and Design Changes

The consoles add USB-C power and a USB-A port, which you can use to connect CRTs or charge controllers. There’s an SD card slot onboard.

The systems also have a new OS and a redesigned case. And you can now swap cartridges without shutting down the system.

Game Compatibility and Video Output

Analogue says each console plays 2,200+ games, region-free. The Mega Sg+ still has a Sega CD connector and comes with a Master System adapter. Video maxes out at 1080p, with no 4K support.

Price and Release Date

You can pre-order the Super Nt+ and Mega Sg+ from Analogue’s website starting on Monday, October 19, at 8AM PT. Each costs $220, plus controller costs if you don’t already have them. Shipping is expected to start in December.

Why FPGA Matters for Retro Gaming

FPGA technology sets Analogue’s consoles apart from software emulation. Instead of running a program that mimics the original hardware, an FPGA chip is configured to behave like the actual console hardware. This approach can reduce input lag and improve compatibility with original cartridges.

For players who still own Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo cartridges, the Super Nt+ and Mega Sg+ offer a way to play them on modern TVs without tracking down a working original console or settling for software emulation. The trade-off remains the same as with the earlier models: you supply the games, and Analogue supplies the hardware.

Who These Consoles Are For

These systems are aimed at collectors and enthusiasts who want authentic hardware behavior on a modern display. If you already own a library of 16-bit cartridges and a compatible controller, the $220 price covers the console itself.

If you’re starting from scratch, budget an extra $30 per controller. That brings a single-console setup closer to $250 before shipping. The value depends on how much you care about original cartridges versus software emulation options.

What Stayed the Same

The core pitch hasn’t changed. You still get region-free playback, original cartridge support, and lag-free performance on a modern TV. The Mega Sg+ keeps its Sega CD connector and Master System adapter. Video still maxes out at 1080p.

The absence of 4K support may matter to some buyers, but it keeps the price in line with the previous generation of Analogue hardware. Wireless support and USB-C power are the headline upgrades this time around.

Analogue’s return to the 16-bit era brings meaningful upgrades over the 2018 and 2019 originals, particularly wireless controller support, USB-C power, and cartridge swapping without a reboot. At $220 each, plus the cost of controllers, these are premium options aimed at players who want authentic hardware behavior on a modern display.
