Recycling Robot: Danu Robotics Builds a Better Sorter

For Amy Ma, the idea behind her recycling robot started with a frustrating discovery at work. After years as a software developer at a London bank, she noticed something strange about her office recycling bins.

“Even though they have tons of money, there’s all these different recycling bins that just end up in the same place,” Ma said.

That moment launched a six-year mission. Today, Ma is the founder of Danu Robotics, an Edinburgh, Scotland-based company that builds a recycling robot designed to sort waste more cheaply and quickly than existing systems.

Why Recycling Still Relies on Human Hands

The more Ma investigated, the deeper the problem went. It wasn’t just her building. The economics of recycling often come down to people sorting by hand through streams of waste to pull out different kinds of recyclable material.

“I saw the technology and thought, we can do so much better,” Ma remembers.

Now she’s making good on that promise. Danu Robotics is finally bringing its version of the product to market after six years of development.

The company’s journey reflects a broader challenge in the industry. Recycling facilities around the world depend on manual labor to separate materials, which is slow, costly, and sometimes dangerous. A recycling robot that works reliably could change that equation entirely.

How the H.E.R.O. Robot Stands Out

Danu’s recycling robot, dubbed H.E.R.O., has a few advantages over its competitors. For example, it picks up items with a pincer claw instead of a suction system. But the bigger difference is the business approach: Danu leverages AI to continuously improve the robot’s software.

That approach is already seeing some traction. Danu has letters of interest from two large customers and $500,000 worth of signed contracts. More notably, more than 200 customers are in its sales pipeline, which gives the company a hook into the $20 billion market for recycling sorting across Europe and North America.

On the back of that promise, Danu has raised $5 million in late-seed funding to keep the commercial pressure on.

Competing in a Growing Market

There’s already a robust market for robotic waste-pickers, particularly the suction-based arms offered by competitors like Glacier and RecycleEye. But Ma believes the economics of recycling will make it easy for a new competitor to prove its worth.

Because recycling centers make money off the materials they’re able to sort out, there’s an immediate return on investment for a working system. Ma estimates that a working site will earn $485,000 in additional revenue from having the robot on the sorting line, compared with a $160,000 initial investment and $24,000 in maintenance fees each year.

That’s significantly cheaper than the competition, and Ma believes the robot will be more efficient, too. For recycling operators, those numbers matter. A recycling robot that pays for itself quickly becomes an easy decision, especially when manual sorting costs continue to rise.

Building a More Versatile Machine

Since those machines are already shipping, Ma’s next goal is to make the robot sturdier, smaller, and more versatile. Once it’s portable enough, it can be used outside dedicated waste facilities, opening up a whole other world of use cases.

“Once it’s smaller, it can be used as a stand-alone recycling solution for events, for shopping centers, hospitals, or airports to recycle their waste at the source,” Ma said, “and that’s the way we can really change how we’re managing our packaging waste.”

That vision extends beyond traditional recycling centers. A smaller recycling robot could sit inside a shopping mall or airport, sorting waste as it’s generated rather than hauling it to a central facility. For Ma, that’s where the real transformation begins.

What This Means for the Future of Recycling

The recycling industry faces mounting pressure. Regulations are tightening, contamination rates remain high, and labor shortages make manual sorting harder to sustain. A recycling robot like H.E.R.O. offers a way to address all three problems at once.

Danu’s AI-driven approach also means the robot improves over time. Each deployment generates data that helps the software get better at recognizing and sorting materials. That continuous learning loop could give Danu an edge as the market grows.

Ma’s background in software development gives her a different perspective from traditional robotics founders. She didn’t start with hardware. She started with a problem she couldn’t ignore, then built the team and technology to solve it.

Danu Robotics at TechCrunch Disrupt

Danu Robotics will be participating in Startup Battlefield 200 at TechCrunch Disrupt, October 13-15 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The event gives early-stage companies a platform to showcase their technology to investors, customers, and partners.

For Danu, the timing is significant. With contracts signed and a growing pipeline, the company is moving from development into commercialization. A recycling robot that once existed only as an idea is now heading to real sorting lines.

Key facts at a glance:

DetailInformation

HeadquartersEdinburgh, Scotland
ProductH.E.R.O. recycling robot
Funding raised$5 million late-seed
Signed contracts$500,000
Sales pipeline200+ customers
Target market$20 billion (Europe and North America)
Estimated site revenue gain$485,000
Initial investment$160,000
Annual maintenance$24,000

Danu Robotics still faces competition from established players. But Ma’s focus on cost, efficiency, and continuous improvement through AI gives the company a clear story to tell. The next phase is about execution: shipping more units, proving the economics at scale, and expanding into new use cases.

If Ma’s vision holds, the recycling robot won’t just replace manual sorting. It will make recycling possible in places that never had the infrastructure for it before. That’s a bigger prize than any single contract, and it’s what keeps Danu Robotics moving forward.
