Paramount Warner Bros Skydance is the new corporate identity set to emerge from one of the largest media mergers in recent history. Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery will operate under the name Skydance once their merger closes, Paramount CEO David Ellison announced Friday. Skydance is the name of Ellison’s original film production company.

The roughly $110 billion deal is expected to close October 6. It will combine two major Hollywood studios, the Paramount+ and HBO Max streaming services, and networks including CBS, CNN, MTV, TBS, Comedy Central, and Food Network.

A Massive Portfolio of Networks and Franchises

Beyond the broadcast and cable networks, the combined company will control major franchises such as The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, the DC Universe, and Yellowstone.

That lineup gives Skydance an unusually deep bench of intellectual property across film, television, and streaming. The portfolio touches nearly every corner of the entertainment business, from prestige fantasy series to long-running reality and comedy programming.

For audiences, the immediate question is what happens to the services and channels they already use. For the industry, the bigger question is how a company of this scale competes in a streaming market that has already consolidated heavily over the past several years.

How the Deal Came Together

The merger followed a drawn-out corporate battle. Netflix had agreed to acquire Warner Bros.’ streaming and studio businesses before the broader Paramount deal moved forward.

Twelve states challenged the deal, arguing it could reduce competition and harm consumers and workers. However, a judge approved a settlement with the state attorneys general this week. That approval cleared a major regulatory hurdle and allowed the transaction to proceed toward its expected closing date.

The settlement did not eliminate all concerns. Critics of large media mergers have long argued that fewer owners mean fewer buyers for creative work and less leverage for workers across the industry. Supporters counter that scale is necessary to compete with technology companies that now dominate audience attention and advertising spending.

Ellison: Both Brands Stay in the Spotlight

Ellison said the Paramount and Warner Bros. brands will remain central to the company’s identity even as the Skydance name takes over at the corporate level.

“We never wanted a new corporate identity to diminish, alter or overshadow either one,” he wrote on X. The new name, he said, gives the company “an identity of its own” while letting both studios “remain in the spotlight.”

In a separate post, Ellison framed the merger as a way to build on the studios’ legacies rather than replace them.

“What once was the peak, is now just the beginning,” he wrote. “Paramount and Warner Bros. shaped over a century of culture. By combining them, we aren’t rewriting history — we’re equipping these iconic studios with a more powerful engine. Together, we are Skydance: a creative-first home for…”

The message appears designed to reassure talent, partners, and audiences that the merger is not an erasure of two historic brands. Whether that holds true in practice will become clearer as the combined company sets its content and streaming strategy.

What the Skydance Name Means for the Industry

The decision to adopt the Skydance name — rather than keep Paramount or Warner Bros. Discovery as the corporate identity — marks a notable shift for two brands with decades of history.

Skydance began as Ellison’s film production company and has built a reputation for backing large-scale franchise entertainment. Using that name for the parent company signals a creative-first positioning, at least in messaging, even as the business operates at a scale that rivals the largest media conglomerates.

For now, Ellison’s comments suggest the Paramount and Warner Bros. names will continue to appear on the content and networks audiences already know. Skydance will serve as the umbrella company behind them.

What Happens Next

With the deal set to close October 6, attention turns to how the combined company will manage its streaming services, its cable networks, and its sprawling franchise library.

Streaming strategy is likely the most closely watched area. Paramount+ and HBO Max serve different audiences and carry different price points and content libraries. How Skydance positions them — separately, bundled, or eventually merged — will shape the company’s subscription economics.

The network portfolio presents a different challenge. Cable channels such as MTV, Comedy Central, and Food Network have loyal audiences but face long-term declines in traditional viewership. The new company will need to decide how much to invest in linear television versus streaming.

Finally, the franchise lineup gives Skydance enviable material to work with. The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, the DC Universe, and Yellowstone are proven properties with built-in audiences. The question is whether one company can give all of them the attention and investment they need.

The Paramount Warner Bros Skydance merger represents one of the largest media consolidations in recent years. By uniting two storied studios under the Skydance banner, the deal reshapes the competitive landscape of streaming, television, and film.

Ellison’s public comments emphasize continuity: both Paramount and Warner Bros. will remain visible, while Skydance provides a new corporate engine behind them. For audiences, talent, and investors alike, the coming months will reveal whether that balance holds as the combined company begins operating as one.
