Hark AI Assistant: A Privacy-First AI Personal Assistant

The race to build a must-have AI personal assistant has a new contender. Hark, a startup founded less than a year ago by serial founder Brett Adcock, has released Hark Pro. The Hark AI assistant is available for free, with a subscription tier aimed at heavy users.

The company describes its mission as building a user interface for AI rather than pursuing AGI or curing cancer. At its core is a model trained specifically for computer use, and that is what Hark Pro does: it uses your computer for you. That may sound less ambitious than the claims of some frontier labs, but a little humility can go a long way in winning over users.

Rather than an app, Hark’s goal is to create an operating system for the AI computers of our future.

What Hark Pro Actually Does

Hark Pro is a full-screen experience with a homepage featuring a central chat dialog. A feed populates with prompts for actions you might need the assistant to take, along with visualizations the company calls “panels” that act as mini-dashboards for topics you care about. The background is custom imagery tailored to the weather and time in your location.

Like other AI assistants, users configure Hark to access their digital life, including email, calendar, hard drive, and credit cards. From there, it can handle digital tasks as well as answer standard chatbot questions.

Abidur Chowdhury, a former Apple staffer who leads design at Hark, demoed the product. It proactively asked him about expenses awaiting approval, emails needing responses, a meeting with a reporter, and a flight that needed booking, which it offered to handle.

The Challenge of Finding Useful Tasks

One of the harder problems for these apps is helping users come up with useful tasks the assistant can actually complete. Chowdhury recalled being impressed when the Hark AI assistant recognized that a colleague needed to renew their car registration at the California DMV and handled it through the agency’s website.

A notable UX choice is that Hark shows the user how the agent navigates the web in a small window. Most AI assistants perform these actions without surfacing them in the app. Chowdhury says the window is intended to build trust that the agent is doing the right thing.

Privacy as a Selling Point

That transparency matters because part of Hark’s pitch is that it is not Meta or OpenAI. “We’re not here to like sell you ads and steal your data,” Chowdhury said.

To truly leverage these models, users need to share their entire digital lives. Beyond real cybersecurity concerns, questions remain about whether users will be comfortable with companies creating detailed profiles of their friends and family.

Asked about that kind of profiling, Chowdhury said the company is “doing work to understand you, and be helpful for what you need, but it’s really like task-related.” He added that it is “really about how Hark can help take something off your plate and be useful.”

How Hark Pro Compares to Competitors

Chowdhury says what sets Hark Pro apart is its effort to fully substitute for your computer, along with his belief that it simply works better.

“Please compare it to the others, be critical,” he said. “It might not be faster than Muse, but it will give you a better result, and it will work end-to-end instead of asking you to take over at a point.”

One open question is which kind of model best suits an AI personal assistant. Hark’s model is explicitly trained for computer use, making it faster and cheaper at those tasks, but it is unclear how much broader knowledge and capability it trades away compared with a frontier LLM.

Software Today, Hardware in 2027

This software is only half of Hark’s promise. Chowdhury made his name designing devices at Apple, and Hark has promised to release an AI-native device to support its software in 2027.

The company remains cagey about the form it will take. Chowdhury bemoaned the “creep factor” of wearable cameras. “I will give you this: The first product that we’re building is a product that’s never ever existed before,” he said. Only time will tell whether that claim holds up or Hark releases something closer to a retread.

Chowdhury also questioned the current state of computing. “It’s so hilarious to me that you have AI now, you have a chatbot, and you type stuff in with a keyboard,” he said. “Fifty years later and the future of computing is still a terminal.”

Hark Pro enters a crowded field that includes Muse, Instinct, and Dots, all hunting for the user experience that makes an AI personal assistant essential. Its differentiators are a model trained for computer use, an interface that shows its work, and a stated commitment to privacy over advertising.

For users weighing how much of their digital life to hand over to an assistant, those choices may matter as much as raw capability.
