OpenAI Visual Ads Arrive in ChatGPT
OpenAI visual ads are now part of ChatGPT’s advertising lineup. The company is adding visual display ads so that promotions appear alongside images users ask ChatGPT to generate. The new format marks another step in OpenAI’s push to build an ad-supported business around its free and low-cost subscription tiers.
The visual ads will begin appearing later this month in the U.S. only, featuring products and services from an initial test group of advertisers. OpenAI says the ads will be clearly labeled and won’t influence the answers ChatGPT provides.
The announcement comes as competition in the AI chatbot space heats up, with rival apps courting the same users and advertisers.
From Text Ads to Visual Display
OpenAI introduced ads earlier this year to support its free and low-cost subscription tiers, then expanded them to India in August. The addition of visual ads reflects a broader plan to court online advertisers who want to reach potential customers through imagery rather than text alone.
Eventually, those ads will let advertisers target ChatGPT’s 1.2 billion weekly users once the format rolls out globally. For now, the rollout stays limited to the U.S. and a select group of advertisers.
A Trade-Off for Users
Integrating display ads could prove disruptive to the user experience. But that may be partly the point: ads could push more casual users to pay for a subscription in order to avoid them.
OpenAI has not said how the ads will be placed within image generation results or how frequently they will appear. The company also has not shared how it will decide which advertisers qualify for the initial test.
Expanded Measurement and Partnerships
Alongside the display ads, OpenAI is expanding its measurement tools and partner ecosystem. The company’s click attribution partners now include:
AppsFlyer
Triple Whale
Adjust
DV Rockerbox
Northbeam
Branch
Singular
Kochava
Airbridge
Tenjin
Full-funnel, advanced measurement partners include Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL. OpenAI has also partnered with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic to help advertisers explore “geo-based” experiments around ads.
Brand Suitability Pilots
OpenAI says it is working on brand suitability evaluation pilots with help from DoubleVerify (DV) and Integral Ad Science (IAS). These pilots aim to help advertisers better understand the ChatGPT ads environment before committing larger budgets.
Brand suitability matters because advertisers want assurance that their messages won’t appear next to content that clashes with their image. By testing evaluation tools early, OpenAI can give advertisers more confidence in the format as it scales.
Why the Move Matters
Combined, the moves show OpenAI working to make ChatGPT a viable ad-supported business for users on free and low-cost plans. The company is betting that advertisers will pay for access to a massive, engaged audience, even as it balances that goal against the risk of annoying users.
The strategy also puts OpenAI in more direct competition with established digital advertising platforms. Rival AI apps are chasing the same advertising budgets, which makes early measurement and brand safety work especially important.
For advertisers, the appeal is clear: a large, active audience that uses ChatGPT for everything from research to creative work. For OpenAI, the challenge is proving that ads can coexist with a smooth user experience.
What to Expect Next
For now, U.S. users on free and low-cost plans are the first to see visual ads alongside generated images. Global availability and broader advertiser access are expected to follow, though OpenAI has not shared a timeline.
Advertisers in the initial test group will get early data on how visual ads perform in ChatGPT, while measurement partners work to prove the format’s value. Whether users accept the trade-off, ads in exchange for free access, will shape how aggressively OpenAI expands the program.
If the test goes well, visual ads could become a standard part of the ChatGPT experience for free users. If it backfires, OpenAI may face pressure to rethink how prominently ads appear. Either way, the launch signals that advertising is now a core part of the company’s plans for ChatGPT.
