iPad Thinner Bezels Could Be Coming Soon

The iPad thinner bezels rumor is back, and it comes from a well-known leaker. According to “Instant Digital” on Weibo, Apple’s tablet lineup could get significantly narrower borders around the display. The post gives no model or timeline, so it remains unclear whether this refers to the entry-level iPad or to Apple’s tablet lineup in general.

What we do know is that refreshes of the entry-level iPad, iPad mini, iPad Air, and iPad Pro are in the pipeline. The next iPad mini is already rumored to gain OLED and slimmer bezels, while the iPad Air is expected to adopt OLED in 2027.

Why Thinner Bezels Matter

Bezels are the borders between the edge of a device and its active display. Reducing them allows for a larger screen in the same footprint, giving users more usable space for apps, videos, and multitasking.

For Apple, this would continue a design trend that has already reshaped the iPhone and MacBook lineups. But the iPad presents unique challenges that phones do not, which is why the rumor has sparked debate among users.

The Practical Problem With Thin Bezels

Not everyone is convinced that smaller borders are an upgrade on a tablet. Several commenters raised a common concern: grip.

On a phone, your fingers wrap around the back and sides. On an iPad, especially larger models, you often hold the device by its edges. If the bezel becomes too thin, your palm or fingers can accidentally trigger the touchscreen.

One commenter put it simply: “Palm rejection only goes so far — you do have to have some place to hold the thing without obscuring the screen.”

Another agreed, noting that on a device larger than a phone, bezels actually serve a useful purpose. They give you a safe zone to hold without disturbing what is on screen.

A Look Back at the iPad Air

The debate is not new. One commenter pointed out that the first iPad Air had much smaller side bezels and it was never a problem.

That argument drew a measured response. The original iPad Air paired thin side bezels with thicker top and bottom bezels, so users could always grab the tablet by one of those edges without touching the display. Some users preferred that design over today’s uniform thin bezels.

As one commenter explained, thinner bezels look better aesthetically, but at a certain point they put form over function. Accidental touch rejection can only do so much. Unless the entire border area of the screen has no touch targets, intentional and accidental touches can be physically indistinguishable.

Which iPad Models Could Change

The leaker’s post did not name a specific model, but the iPad lineup is broad. Here is what is currently expected across the range:

ModelRumored Display Change
Entry-level iPadPossible slimmer bezels
iPad miniOLED and slimmer bezels
iPad AirOLED expected in 2027
iPad ProRefreshes in the pipeline

The iPad mini stands out as the most likely candidate for an early update. It is already rumored to gain OLED and slimmer bezels, making it a natural fit for this design shift.

The iPad Air, meanwhile, is expected to adopt OLED in 2027. That is a separate but related upgrade, since OLED panels can enable different chassis designs.

What Users Are Saying

Reaction to the rumor has been mixed. Some readers are excited, particularly about the iPad mini.

“Excited for the mini for sure,” one commenter wrote. “Thinner bezels will make it more attractive.”

Others were less impressed. One reader joked that the news was predictable: “This just in, bezels could get smaller! In other news, water sometimes falls from the sky and fire is hot!”

A third commenter had a different request entirely: “Honestly just give the iPad Air 256GB base.”

What to Watch For

Since the leaker gave no timeline, there is no confirmed release window for any iPad thinner bezels design. Apple typically refreshes its iPad lineup across different points in the year, and the entry-level iPad, iPad mini, iPad Air, and iPad Pro do not usually update at the same time.

The most concrete clue remains the iPad mini, which is already linked to both OLED and slimmer bezels. If that device arrives first, it could preview the direction Apple takes with the rest of the lineup.

Until then, the rumor is worth treating as a signal rather than a confirmation. A single post without a model or timeline leaves plenty of room for the final product to differ.

An iPad thinner bezels redesign is plausible and fits Apple’s broader design language. But for tablet users, thinner borders raise a real question about grip and accidental touches. Whether Apple can solve that trade-off may matter more than how the device looks.
