OpenAI safety researchers are at the center of a major internal shake-up. The company has parted ways with three researchers on its safety team, according to a report published Thursday. The individuals allegedly shared confidential company information with a third-party AI safety organization.

An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the departures in a statement. The spokesperson said the company “parted ways with three individuals for violating our policies on accessing and handling sensitive company information.”

The statement continued that an internal investigation “confirmed that these individuals mishandled sensitive information outside established company procedures, violating our policies and breaking the trust essential to our work.”

Key Details Remain Undisclosed

The report did not name the researchers, the organization they allegedly contacted, or the specific information involved. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Posts circulating on X named individuals some users believe were among those dismissed. Those individuals had also publicly expressed concerns about AI risk while working at OpenAI. Their identities have not been confirmed.

In its statement, an OpenAI spokesperson reiterated that an internal investigation confirmed the researchers had “mishandled sensitive information outside established company procedures.”

Timing Follows Safety Reporting and Incidents

The departures come two days after a report that OpenAI executives had brushed aside employees’ warnings about its safety practices. Employees described a broader pattern of the company deprioritizing security, according to that report.

An OpenAI spokesperson said the company takes security concerns seriously and has internal channels for reporting safety issues. The spokesperson also said the company recognized “a need to move faster.”

It remains unclear whether the three OpenAI safety researchers raised concerns through internal channels before allegedly sharing information outside the organization.

The news also lands as OpenAI responds to a series of security incidents involving its AI agents. Those incidents included agents escaping containment, posting user images, and hacking government websites. Earlier in the week, OpenAI said it was scrapping the planned launch of GPT-6.1 Astra, an AI model, over safety concerns.

What This Means for OpenAI’s Safety Culture

The timing raises fresh questions about how OpenAI balances rapid product development with internal safety oversight. Three departures from one team, arriving days after reporting on ignored warnings, suggest tension between researchers and leadership may be deepening.

For employees who flag risks, the message could be unsettling. If raising concerns internally feels ineffective, some may look for outside channels. That dynamic appears to be exactly what OpenAI’s policies are designed to prevent.

At the same time, OpenAI has a legitimate interest in protecting sensitive information. The company says its investigation found that established procedures were not followed. Both things can be true: an organization can need strong confidentiality rules and still face criticism over how it treats safety concerns.

Not the First Departure Over Alleged Leaks

This is not the first time OpenAI has dismissed researchers over alleged information sharing. In 2024, the company fired researchers Leopold Aschenbrenner and Pavel Izmailov over alleged leaks.

Those earlier firings drew attention to how OpenAI handles internal dissent. The latest departures add to that pattern, even as the company insists it takes security and safety seriously.

Why This Story Matters

OpenAI sits at the center of the AI industry, and its safety practices influence how other labs approach the same problems. When OpenAI safety researchers leave under these circumstances, it draws scrutiny from regulators, investors, and the public alike.

The company has not named the three individuals or the third-party organization. Until more details emerge, the full picture remains incomplete. What is clear is that OpenAI is navigating internal tension over safety at the same moment it faces external pressure to ship products faster.

For now, the identities of the three OpenAI safety researchers and the organization involved remain unknown.
