Snapdragon 8 Elite Arrives With Two New Chips

Qualcomm has announced two new flagship smartphone processors, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, both built with a strong emphasis on AI. The reveal took place during the company’s annual Snapdragon Summit, where Qualcomm made clear that its new Snapdragon 8 Elite lineup is designed to push on-device intelligence further than before.

Instead of treating AI as an add-on, these chips are built around it. Qualcomm says the goal is to deliver better personalization for AI agents running directly on a smartphone, without leaning entirely on the cloud.

New Sensing Hubs Power On-Device AI

A central upgrade in the Snapdragon 8 Elite chips is a new sensing hub that can run small models with up to 200 million parameters. That capability opens the door to several practical, phone-based features:

  • A personal scribe that runs locally on the device

  • The ability to differentiate between speakers

  • Memory building based on your usage, for better task automation suggestions

  • A complete voice-in and voice-out agent running through the chip

In short, these processors are not just faster. They are meant to let a phone behave more like an assistant that learns and responds on its own.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 vs. Extreme Gen 6

The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 introduces a new accelerator element built to run models more efficiently. The high-end Extreme version goes further, capable of running a 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts (MoE) model locally.

That MoE approach means that while the overall model size is 30B, only a certain number of parameters activate for a given task. For comparison, in June at its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), Apple released a 20-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model, described as the most advanced of its third generation of foundation models.

Camera and Video Capabilities

The new Qualcomm CPU also provides pixel-level control for cameras, enabling more pro-level experiences along with improved stabilization and motion understanding. The Extreme version supports video recording at 8K 60fps and 4K240 for ultra HD slow-motion. It also enables the new Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec for pro-level recording.

Audio and Call Enhancements

Both chips can use AI to boost vocals and reduce noise. They also include Qualcomm’s new voice bubble tech, which isolates a user’s voice during calls to cut down on background sound.

Motorola Signature 27 Debuts With the Extreme Chip

At the event, Motorola announced its Motorola Signature 27 smartphone, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. General availability is expected sometime this year. Specific pricing and an exact release date were not disclosed.

Why Phone-Based AI Still Matters

Qualcomm has been working on more than 40 AI devices, yet there is still a belief that many people will use their phones for AI rather than dedicated devices. Nothing co-founder Carl Pei has hinted at this trend in the past, and more recently, new Apple CEO John Ternus reinforced the same line of thought during the iPhone Duo launch earlier this month.

That context explains Qualcomm’s approach. By putting serious AI compute into its flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite chips, the company is betting that the smartphone remains the most personal and most frequently used AI device people own.

What the Snapdragon 8 Elite Means for Buyers

For anyone shopping for a flagship phone in the coming months, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Extreme Gen 6 signal where the market is heading: local AI agents, pro-grade video, and smarter audio processing. The Extreme variant clearly targets creators and power users who want 8K recording and larger on-device models, while the standard Gen 6 still brings the new accelerator and sensing hub.

The gap between the two chips comes down to how much local AI processing and video firepower a device can handle. Phones built on the Extreme version should appeal to users who record a lot of high-resolution footage or want the largest possible on-device model running without a connection.

With Motorola already on board, more device announcements are likely to follow as the year progresses. Buyers weighing an upgrade should watch for which manufacturers adopt each tier, since the differences between the standard and Extreme chips could shape both price and performance.
