Reliance Jio has expanded its JioPC cloud service to any internet user in India, offering a way to turn aging computers into AI-ready PCs without expensive hardware upgrades. The JioPC AI cloud service, initially launched in July 2025 for Jio broadband subscribers, now works as a stand-alone subscription for users across any telecom or broadband provider.
What the JioPC AI Cloud Offers
The JioPC AI cloud streams a virtual PC directly to your existing computer. The service provides plans with up to eight virtual CPUs, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. This means even computers as old as eight years can access the computing power needed for modern AI applications.
Pricing for the JioPC AI cloud starts at ₹1,000 (about $11) for a two-month subscription. A 12-month plan costs ₹4,000 (around $42) for 8GB RAM and 500GB storage, or ₹5,000 (about $53) for the 16GB and 1TB configuration. These price points position the JioPC AI cloud as an affordable alternative to purchasing new hardware.
The Growing PC Market in India
India had more than 65 million PCs in use during 2025, including approximately 34 million consumer machines and 31 million commercial devices. Industry estimates from IDC suggest the installed base will approach 69 million by the end of 2026.
Replacement cycles have been stretching longer in recent years. Consumers and small businesses in India typically replace their PCs every five to six years, compared with four to five years in 2022. Enterprises are also extending their machine lifecycles to about four years, up from three years previously.
These extended replacement cycles create an opportunity for cloud-based solutions. Rather than forcing users to buy new computers every few years, the JioPC AI cloud enables them to keep their existing machines while accessing modern computing capabilities.
Why the JioPC AI Cloud Matters for AI Adoption
Jio is betting that cloud computing can extend these lifecycles even further. By shifting processing and storage away from the device and into data centers, the company can keep adding computing capacity without requiring users to replace their machines.
Prabhu Ram, vice president of industry research at CyberMedia Research, suggests the JioPC AI cloud could create a market where consumers pay for computing capability rather than repeatedly spending on hardware upgrades.
“Jio is broadening its value proposition by opening JioPC to non-Jio users, while also challenging the traditional hardware upgrade cycle,” Ram told TechCrunch.
However, Ram does not expect this model to replace conventional PCs entirely. Instead, the JioPC AI cloud could create a parallel, price-sensitive tier for households, students, and others “for whom buying a new AI-capable PC was never really on the table to begin with.”
For millions of Indians, the JioPC AI cloud represents an accessible entry point into AI-powered computing. Students can run advanced applications for their studies. Small businesses can access enterprise-grade computing without significant capital investment. Home users can experiment with AI tools that would otherwise require expensive hardware upgrades.
Challenges Facing the JioPC AI Cloud
Internet Dependency
Indians have traditionally preferred owning their hardware over paying for PCs as a service, according to IDC’s senior market analyst Bharath Shenoy. Jio will need to convince consumers that a recurring subscription for the JioPC AI cloud offers enough value to give up the advantages of a conventional PC, including the ability to work without internet access.
This dependency could be particularly challenging in smaller cities and towns, where affordable computing has the most room to grow. The JioPC AI cloud requires a stable internet connection, and any disruption affects the user experience. Unlike a conventional computer, users cannot continue working during connectivity issues.
Competition from Refurbished PCs
There is also competition at the lower end of the market. Refurbished PCs allow consumers to own inexpensive hardware without remaining dependent on connectivity, Shenoy noted. These machines provide an alternative for budget-conscious users who may prefer ownership over subscription-based access.
The refurbished market in India has grown significantly, offering affordable options for consumers who want to own their devices. The JioPC AI cloud must demonstrate advantages that outweigh the ownership benefits of refurbished machines.
The AI-Ready Question
Jio’s pitch of an AI-ready PC through the JioPC AI cloud challenges the conventional idea of what an AI PC looks like. The company has not disclosed much about the underlying hardware powering the cloud service. Notably, the specifications provided do not mention dedicated AI accelerators for on-device generative AI workloads, which remain a key feature of the new generation of AI PCs.
This raises questions about how the JioPC AI cloud delivers AI capabilities. Without dedicated AI accelerators, the service may rely on general-purpose computing resources. While this may still provide significant performance improvements over aging hardware, it may not match the capabilities of purpose-built AI PCs.
Will Users Embrace the JioPC AI Cloud?
The real test for Jio, Ram said, is whether people come to see cloud computing as a “daily utility” rather than an “opportunistic workaround.” Success depends on whether users are willing to pay for computing power instead of buying new hardware.
For many Indian consumers, the traditional preference for hardware ownership presents a significant barrier. Jio must demonstrate that the subscription model delivers consistent value, reliability, and performance that justifies recurring payments.
The company must also address concerns about data privacy and security. When users rely on the JioPC AI cloud, their data resides in Jio’s data centers rather than on their local machines. Jio needs to build trust and transparency around how user data is handled.
The JioPC AI cloud represents an ambitious attempt to bridge the gap between aging hardware and emerging AI capabilities. By making the service available to all internet users, Reliance Jio is expanding its reach beyond its broadband subscriber base and challenging the conventional PC upgrade cycle.
The service offers a practical solution for those who cannot afford new AI-capable hardware but need access to modern computing power. Whether Indian consumers embrace cloud-based computing as a daily utility rather than an occasional workaround will determine the long-term success of this initiative.
For now, the JioPC AI cloud provides an accessible entry point into AI-ready computing, potentially transforming how millions of users access advanced computing capabilities without replacing their existing machines. With affordable pricing and expanding availability, the service could reshape the Indian computing landscape over the coming years.
