Self-Driving Trucks California: Official Testing Underway

Self-driving trucks California are now officially testing on public highways. Aurora Innovation and Kodiak AI have received permits from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to test their autonomous vehicle technology on public roads. Kodiak has already begun testing with a handful of self-driving trucks California primarily around its Mountain View office.

New Regulations End California’s Ban on Self-Driving Trucks California

Both companies applied for testing permits this spring under updated rules approved by the California DMV. The regulations, approved April 28, lifted a ban on driverless vehicles weighing over 10,000 pounds from testing on public roads. This change provides a regulatory path for companies to test, and eventually deploy, self-driving trucks California operations.

The California DMV confirmed that Kodiak and Aurora met all permitting criteria for self-driving trucks California, including safety requirements, insurance coverage, vehicle registration, safety driver qualification, and other necessary standards. The testing permits require a human safety operator behind the wheel at all times. Companies testing self-driving trucks California are also prohibited from operating on roads with posted speed limits of 25 miles per hour or less, unless traveling on a “direct route” between destinations.

Opposition to Self-Driving Trucks California from Teamsters

Despite the regulatory progress, the prospect of self-driving trucks California on highways continues to face significant opposition. Last week, Teamsters California sued the state’s DMV, alleging that the agency circumvented laws requiring it to study and publicly disclose the possible economic impacts of allowing self-driving trucks California on public roads. The lawsuit, filed in the state’s Superior Court in Alameda County, also accused the DMV of failing to consider the safety risks to motorists sharing roads with self-driving trucks California.

Companies Shift Focus Back to Self-Driving Trucks California

For autonomous vehicle developers, the new rules allow them to test and eventually deploy self-driving trucks California in their home territories. Aurora and Kodiak are both based in California, but until recently focused their testing and deployment activities in Texas because of their home state’s previous ban on self-driving trucks California operations.

Aurora launched a self-driving truck service in Texas in May 2025, starting with a Dallas-to-Houston route. The company has since expanded its operations, adding routes between Fort Worth and El Paso, El Paso and Phoenix, Fort Worth and Phoenix, and Laredo and Dallas. These experiences are now informing their approach to self-driving trucks California.

Kodiak began commercial driverless truck operations in January 2025 in an off-road environment in West Texas’ remote Permian Basin. The company has since expanded to on-highway operations, including a route between Dallas and Houston. Kodiak’s testing of self-driving trucks California represents a homecoming for the Mountain View-based company.

What’s Next for Self-Driving Trucks California

The California DMV’s updated regulations represent a significant shift in the state’s approach to self-driving trucks California. Companies can now test their technology in their home state, potentially accelerating development and deployment timelines for self-driving trucks California.

However, the Teamsters lawsuit highlights ongoing concerns about economic disruption and safety from self-driving trucks California. The outcome of this legal challenge could influence how quickly self-driving trucks California become a common sight on highways.

For now, California residents may see Kodiak’s self-driving trucks California around Mountain View, while Aurora prepares to begin its own testing operations. Both companies must comply with strict safety requirements and operational restrictions as they gather data and refine their autonomous driving systems for self-driving trucks California.

The testing permits mark a milestone for self-driving trucks California, with significant potential for improving freight efficiency and addressing driver shortages. As self-driving trucks California testing expands, regulators, industry stakeholders, and labor groups will continue to debate the appropriate balance between innovation and protecting workers and public safety.
