Aga Khan Schools

Aga Khan Schools

The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa has announced employment opportunities for professionals and individuals interested in contributing to its academic, residential, student development and facilities operations. The available opportunities include HVAC Technician and Academy Fellows.

The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa is an International Baccalaureate World School and was the first institution established within the network of Aga Khan Academies. The Academy provides an international learning environment supported by modern facilities, a multicultural student community and an experienced team of educators and other professionals.

The Academy’s educational approach is designed to prepare students for lives characterised by leadership and service. Admission is means-blind and based on merit, with eligible students considered regardless of their socio-economic circumstances.

The latest opportunities cover two distinctly different areas of the Academy’s operations. The HVAC Technician position focuses on maintaining safe, reliable and efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems throughout the Academy’s facilities. The Academy Fellows opportunity, on the other hand, combines residential student support, academic engagement, service learning, mentoring and participation in the Academy’s co-curricular activities.

Interested applicants should carefully review the responsibilities associated with each opportunity before submitting their applications.

Available Positions at the Aga Khan Academy

HVAC Technician

Organisation: Aga Khan Schools

Duty Station: Aga Khan Academy Mombasa

The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa is seeking a qualified and experienced HVAC Technician to support the effective operation of its facilities.

The HVAC Technician will be responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems throughout the Academy. The position is important in maintaining safe, efficient and reliable climate-control systems across the institution.

The technician’s work will contribute directly to maintaining a comfortable and conducive learning and working environment for students, educators and other members of the Academy community.

The role goes beyond responding to equipment breakdowns. It involves preventive maintenance, inspection, fault diagnosis, repairs, monitoring contractors, documentation, calibration of control systems and technical support.

The successful candidate will therefore be involved in both the day-to-day operation of HVAC equipment and longer-term efforts to improve the reliability and efficiency of the Academy’s climate-control infrastructure.

Duties and Responsibilities

The HVAC Technician will undertake the following responsibilities:

  • Install heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and equipment across the Academy’s facilities.

  • Maintain HVAC systems to ensure that equipment continues operating efficiently and reliably.

  • Repair heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems whenever faults, breakdowns or other operational problems occur.

  • Ensure HVAC installations and equipment throughout the facilities support effective climate control.

  • Conduct routine inspections of HVAC units to identify maintenance requirements and potential problems.

  • Test HVAC equipment as part of routine maintenance and operational monitoring.

  • Carry out preventive maintenance on HVAC units in accordance with relevant manufacturer specifications.

  • Ensure preventive maintenance activities are undertaken in accordance with applicable safety standards.

  • Diagnose mechanical faults affecting heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment.

  • Troubleshoot electrical faults within HVAC systems.

  • Diagnose faults down to the component level where required.

  • Undertake corrective repairs after identifying mechanical or electrical problems.

  • Carry out repairs in a manner that helps extend the operational life of HVAC equipment.

  • Support efforts to reduce unnecessary equipment replacement costs through effective fault diagnosis, maintenance and corrective repairs.

  • Maintain the Academy’s air conditioning infrastructure.

  • Repair air conditioning infrastructure when faults or operational problems arise.

  • Upgrade air conditioning infrastructure where required as part of maintaining effective HVAC operations.

  • Maintain associated ventilation control systems.

  • Repair and upgrade ventilation control systems to support the effective operation of the Academy’s facilities.

  • Ensure HVAC and ventilation systems contribute to optimal indoor air quality.

  • Support the maintenance of comfortable indoor conditions across the Academy.

  • Develop preventive maintenance programmes for heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

  • Modify existing preventive maintenance programmes where changes are required.

  • Implement preventive maintenance programmes across relevant HVAC systems.

  • Use preventive maintenance activities to improve the reliability of HVAC equipment.

  • Support efforts to reduce HVAC system downtime through effective maintenance planning and implementation.

  • Oversee HVAC-related work undertaken by external contractors and service providers.

  • Inspect work completed by external HVAC contractors.

  • Ensure external contractors and service providers comply with expected quality standards.

  • Monitor contractor work to ensure compliance with relevant safety requirements.

  • Ensure work undertaken by external providers meets expected HVAC performance standards.

  • Maintain accurate records relating to HVAC operations and maintenance.

  • Keep documentation of HVAC activities up to date.

  • Maintain appropriate maintenance schedules.

  • Prepare and maintain service reports covering HVAC maintenance and repair activities.

  • Maintain relevant technical drawings associated with HVAC systems and infrastructure.

  • Ensure HVAC controls are properly calibrated.

  • Configure HVAC controls and automation systems appropriately.

  • Support energy efficiency through effective configuration and calibration of HVAC systems.

  • Ensure HVAC control and automation systems contribute to operational consistency across the Academy’s facilities.

  • Observe applicable health regulations while undertaking HVAC work.

  • Follow relevant safety requirements when installing, maintaining, inspecting and repairing equipment.

  • Observe applicable environmental requirements when handling refrigerants and undertaking HVAC-related activities.

  • Handle refrigerants in accordance with relevant health, safety and environmental requirements.

  • Follow appropriate safety procedures when working with electrical systems.

  • Observe applicable requirements when working with mechanical components.

  • Provide HVAC-related technical support to the Academy’s management.

  • Provide advice to management concerning HVAC systems, operational issues and potential upgrades.

  • Support other maintenance personnel with technical advice on HVAC-related matters.

  • Provide technical input concerning HVAC system upgrades when required.

  • Undertake any other reasonable and relevant responsibilities assigned by the line manager.

Role Overview

The HVAC Technician will have responsibility for maintaining an important part of the Academy’s physical infrastructure. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems affect indoor comfort, air quality and the overall usability of facilities, making routine inspection and preventive maintenance central elements of the position.

Preventive maintenance forms a significant part of the role. Instead of concentrating exclusively on equipment after a breakdown, the technician will be expected to inspect and test HVAC units regularly and undertake scheduled maintenance in accordance with manufacturer specifications and safety standards.

The position also involves technical fault diagnosis. When a system develops a mechanical or electrical problem, the technician will be expected to troubleshoot the equipment down to the component level and undertake corrective repairs. This approach is intended to help extend the useful life of equipment while reducing unnecessary replacement costs.

Another important component of the role involves air conditioning infrastructure and ventilation control systems. The technician will maintain, repair and upgrade these systems to support indoor air quality and comfort throughout the Academy.

Maintenance planning will also form part of the position. The HVAC Technician will participate in developing, modifying and implementing preventive maintenance programmes. These programmes are intended to increase system reliability and minimise avoidable downtime.

Where the Academy engages external contractors or service providers to perform HVAC-related work, the technician will provide oversight and inspection. Work performed externally must meet the Academy’s expected quality, safety and performance requirements.

Documentation is equally important. The position requires accurate records of HVAC activities, including maintenance schedules, service reports and technical drawings. Effective documentation provides an operational history of the systems and supports future maintenance and repair activities.

The HVAC Technician will also work with controls and automation systems. Proper calibration and configuration will be required to support energy efficiency and consistent operation.

Health, safety and environmental requirements must be observed throughout these responsibilities, particularly when working with refrigerants, electrical systems and mechanical components.

In addition to hands-on technical work, the technician will serve as a source of HVAC-related technical advice for management and other maintenance personnel.

Academy Fellows

Organisation: Aga Khan Schools

Duty Station: Aga Khan Academy Mombasa

The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa is also recruiting Academy Fellows to participate in the institution’s residential, academic, service-learning and co-curricular programmes.

The Academy Fellow opportunity is structured around direct engagement with students and Academy life. An Academy Fellow will live in an apartment and serve within the student residential programme as a Residential Parent.

The fellow will participate in different aspects of students’ academic and personal development while contributing to the wider Academy community.

Although Academy Fellows do not serve as classroom teachers, they are expected to have scheduled contact with classes. This engagement allows fellows to become familiar with the Academy’s teaching and learning environment and better support students outside regular classroom hours.

Their responsibilities extend to academic tutoring, service learning, residential life, mentoring, co-curricular activities and student trips.

Residential Programme Responsibilities

Academy Fellows will play an important role in the Academy’s student residential programme.

As Residential Parents, fellows will help promote community life within the residential environment while supporting students in both their personal and academic development.

Their responsibilities include:

  • Live in an apartment while participating in the Academy’s residential programme.

  • Serve as a Residential Parent within the student residential programme.

  • Promote positive community life among residential students.

  • Guide residential students as they work towards their personal goals.

  • Support students in pursuing their academic goals.

  • Develop close relationships with their dorm sons and daughters.

  • Check in with residential students frequently.

  • Provide regular guidance and support to students within the residential community.

  • Supervise students in an official residential capacity twice each week.

  • Participate in official residential supervision one weekend in every three.

  • Help create a residential environment that supports students academically and socially.

The Residential Parent function places Academy Fellows close to the daily life of students. Regular interaction enables fellows to provide guidance while remaining aware of students’ academic and social experiences.

Academic Engagement and Student Support

Academy Fellows are not appointed as teachers. However, they will have contact with classes and are expected to engage with the Academy’s learning and teaching environment.

This engagement will allow fellows to provide additional academic support outside normal class hours.

Their academic responsibilities include:

  • Have scheduled contact with classes despite not serving as classroom teachers.

  • Engage fully with learning and teaching at the Academy.

  • Develop sufficient familiarity with the academic environment to support students effectively.

  • Provide additional tutoring to students after school hours.

  • Support students during residential study time.

  • Spend approximately 10 hours each week supporting two or three classes.

  • Provide class support in a subject selected according to the fellow or intern’s area of choice.

The Academy has identified Mathematics and Science among the areas where student support is most needed.

English as an Additional Language is another area of need, particularly for students entering the Academy through the Talent Identification Programme from marginalised communities in Kenya.

Through this academic engagement, Academy Fellows will complement the work taking place during normal learning hours by providing students with additional assistance during after-school and residential study periods.

Service-Learning Programme

Another major responsibility of Academy Fellows is participation in the development and delivery of the Academy’s Service-Learning Programme.

The programme takes place every week and involves students in Years 6 to 10.

Academy Fellows will dedicate approximately 10 hours each week to the Service-Learning Programme.

Their responsibilities include:

  • Develop the Academy’s Service-Learning Programme.

  • Participate in delivering the programme every week.

  • Support Service-Learning activities involving students in Years 6 to 10.

  • Commit approximately 10 hours each week to Service-Learning responsibilities.

  • Plan activities associated with the programme.

  • Work with community partners involved in Service-Learning activities.

  • Participate in delivering the programme to students.

  • Work with colleagues involved in implementation of the Service-Learning Programme.

  • Support individual student groups as they develop their projects.

  • Assist groups as they move from project development to implementation.

The Service-Learning Programme provides Academy Fellows with a substantial role connecting student development, community engagement and practical project activities.

Fellows will be expected to participate in the full process, including planning, coordination with community partners, delivery and direct support to students implementing their projects.

Student Mentoring

Mentoring forms another significant part of the Academy Fellow role.

Each fellow will serve as a mentor to a small group of students. The mentoring responsibility covers both academic and social support.

Academy Fellows will:

  • Serve as mentors for a small group of students.

  • Support students academically through the mentoring relationship.

  • Provide social support to students within their mentoring group.

  • Guide students as they work towards their personal development goals.

  • Help students navigate aspects of Academy life through regular engagement.

This responsibility complements the Residential Parent role. Fellows will therefore interact with students in several contexts, including residential life, academic support, mentoring and co-curricular programmes.

Co-Curricular Programme

Academy Fellows are expected to contribute actively to the Academy’s co-curricular programme.

The particular form of involvement may differ depending on the fellow’s interests and areas in which they can contribute.

Examples of co-curricular involvement identified by the Academy include:

  • Coaching athletic teams.

  • Providing music lessons.

  • Running student clubs.

  • Supporting gardening activities.

  • Supporting cooking clubs or related activities.

  • Participating in debating activities.

  • Supporting Model United Nations activities.

  • Contributing to TEDx-related activities.

  • Guiding students interested in applying to leading international universities.

  • Assisting students with SAT preparation.

  • Supporting students as they work on essays.

  • Providing guidance on personal statements.

The co-curricular component gives Academy Fellows an opportunity to contribute beyond formal academic support and residential supervision.

Through sports, music, clubs, university preparation and other activities, fellows will participate in different aspects of student development and Academy community life.

Student Trips and Off-Campus Activities

Academy Fellows will also participate in student activities taking place away from the Academy campus.

Their responsibilities include:

  • Chaperone off-campus residential trips.

  • Chaperone student day trips.

  • Accompany students on relevant organised activities outside the Academy.

  • Participate in trips to places of worship when required.

These duties form part of the wider student support and supervision responsibilities associated with the Academy Fellow opportunity.

Understanding the Academy Fellow Role

The Academy Fellow opportunity covers several interconnected responsibilities rather than focusing on a single function.

At its core is the Residential Parent responsibility. Fellows will live within the Academy environment and maintain regular contact with residential students. They will provide guidance, supervision and support as students pursue their personal and academic objectives.

Academic engagement is another significant element. Although fellows will not teach as regular teachers, they will spend time engaging with classes and the Academy’s learning environment. This provides the context needed to support students with tutoring after school and during residential study periods.

Approximately 10 hours each week will be dedicated to supporting two or three classes in an area selected by the fellow or intern. Mathematics, Science and English as an Additional Language have been identified as areas of particular need.

Service learning represents another approximately 10-hour weekly commitment. Fellows will help develop and deliver the programme for Years 6 to 10, plan activities, work with community partners and support student groups developing and implementing projects.

The mentoring responsibility provides a more focused form of student engagement. Each fellow will work with a smaller group of students and provide academic and social support.

The Academy also expects fellows to contribute actively to its co-curricular environment. The source vacancy identifies several possible areas of contribution, ranging from athletics and music to gardening, cooking, debating, Model United Nations and TEDx activities.

Fellows may also contribute to the university application preparation of students interested in leading international universities, including support with SAT preparation, essays and personal statements.

The role therefore requires active participation in different parts of Academy life, including residential programmes, academic engagement, mentoring, service learning and extracurricular activities.

Fellows will additionally be expected to chaperone students during relevant off-campus activities, including residential trips, day trips and visits to places of worship.
