The Arc shutdown date is officially set for December 22. On that day, The Browser Company will sunset its Arc browser, and users will no longer be able to access their accounts. The company has been focusing its resources on an AI browser called Dia, and it is now trying to get Arc users to switch over before the Arc shutdown date arrives.

The news is not a complete surprise. The Browser Company has been pouring its attention into Dia, an AI browser it first announced last year, and Arc has taken a back seat in that strategy. Even so, the confirmed Arc shutdown date gives remaining users a clear deadline to act.

What Happens on the Arc Shutdown Date

When the Arc shutdown date arrives on December 22, the browser goes dark. Accounts stop working, and users lose access to the service they have been using. There is no indication of an extension or a grace period beyond that date.

The good news is that the company is not leaving users stranded. According to The Browser Company, all bookmarks, extensions, passwords and history will transfer over to Dia automatically. That means the move should be relatively painless for anyone who makes the switch before the Arc shutdown date.

Your Data Moves Automatically

For most people, the biggest worry about a browser shutting down is losing saved data. The automatic transfer covers the essentials:

  • Bookmarks you have saved over time

  • Extensions you rely on day to day

  • Passwords stored in the browser

  • History of pages you have visited

Because this transfer is automatic, users do not need to manually export each category before the Arc shutdown date. That said, it is still wise to check that everything arrived correctly once you are set up in Dia.

Account Access Ends

After the Arc shutdown date, users will no longer be able to access their accounts. If you have anything in Arc you want to keep, review it before December 22 rather than waiting until the last minute. Once access ends, there is no going back.

Why The Browser Company Is Retiring Arc

Arc never quite caught on, even though it offered people the ability to personalize any website while browsing. That personalization feature was a selling point, but it was not enough to build a large enough audience to justify keeping the browser alive alongside the company’s newer ambitions.

Instead, The Browser Company has thrown its weight behind Dia. The shift in priorities explains why the Arc shutdown date was coming, even before it was officially confirmed. Resources that once went into Arc now go into an AI-first browsing experience.

What Dia Offers Instead

Dia is, more or less, a standard AI-based web browser. There is a chatbot that the company says can understand context across multiple open tabs, which sets it apart from tools that only look at one page at a time. The app can also do things like summarize emails and YouTube videos.

Dia also pulls together a “morning brief” each day that integrates data from calendars, inboxes and web links. You know the drill. It is generative AI, packaged into the browsing experience.

AI Features Are Optional

Not everyone wants AI in their browser, and The Browser Company seems aware of that. The company is trying to lure in customers who are wary of AI by noting that all of those additional features are optional. In other words, you can use Dia as a browser without leaning on its generative AI tools if that is your preference.

That messaging matters ahead of the Arc shutdown date. Users who liked Arc for its browsing experience, rather than for AI, are being told they can still have a familiar experience in Dia without being forced into features they did not ask for.

What Arc Users Should Do Before December 22

If you are still using Arc, the Arc shutdown date is your deadline. A little preparation now avoids scrambling later.

  1. Confirm your Dia setup. Make sure your account is ready so the automatic transfer has somewhere to go.

  2. Review your saved data. Check your bookmarks, extensions, passwords and history before the Arc shutdown date.

  3. Verify the transfer afterward. Once you are in Dia, confirm that everything moved over as expected.

  4. Note anything you want to keep. If there is something in Arc that matters to you, look at it before December 22.

Who This Affects Most

The Arc shutdown date matters most to people who stuck with Arc through its run. Casual users who already moved to another browser have little to worry about. But anyone who made Arc their daily driver should treat December 22 as a hard stop and plan accordingly.

The Arc shutdown date marks the end of one experiment and the start of another. Arc offered personalization and a distinct take on browsing, but it never quite caught on. Now The Browser Company is betting on Dia and its AI features, with optional tools for users who want a more traditional experience.

If you are still on Arc, December 22 is the day your account access ends. The automatic transfer of bookmarks, extensions, passwords and history makes the move easier, but it is still worth checking your data before and after the Arc shutdown date. Plan ahead, and the transition should be smooth.
