Volvo Bets on Nvidia for Hands-Free Automated Driving

Volvo is making a bigger bet on Nvidia as it pushes deeper into hands-free automated driving. The two companies announced on Thursday an expansion of a partnership that spans nearly a decade, with Volvo set to use three pieces of Nvidia hardware and software in future vehicles to enable an automated driving system capable of navigating both urban streets and highways.

Under the expanded deal, Volvo will combine its own vehicle safety systems and engineering with Nvidia’s Hyperion sensor and compute architecture, the Alpamayo driving software stack, and the Halos safety evaluation layer.

What Each Piece of the Nvidia Stack Does

The Alpamayo stack is redundant and diverse, according to Ali Kani, who heads up Nvidia’s automotive division. It pairs Alpamayo — a family of AI models, datasets, and simulation and development tools used to build autonomous-driving software — with classical software that relies on machine learning alongside camera and radar perception.

“The point is we run these two stacks at the same time, and we have multimodal sensors in our philosophy because it’s a safer product that way,” Kani said. He added that the open source Alpamayo software has now been downloaded by more than 650,000 developers.

The Halos safety evaluation layer adds another level of validation, while the Hyperion architecture handles the sensor and compute demands of the system. Together, these components form the backbone of Volvo’s next-generation hands-free automated driving ambitions.

Volvo’s Shift to a Full-Tech Stack Company

Volvo did not reveal the value of the partnership or which vehicle model would be first to use the new Nvidia tech stack. But Alwin Bakkenes, Volvo’s head of software development, hinted at the scale of the deal and how it reflects the automaker’s evolution toward developing a full-tech stack designed for its electric vehicles as well as its plug-in hybrids and gas-powered vehicles.

“Automakers used to be very much like car-line-based development and working with various suppliers, etc. and we have completely changed and migrated into being a full-tech stack company,” Bakkenes said, adding that Volvo will start this partnership with a brand new vehicle that “will come in the not-too-near future.”

He said the first vehicle with this new Nvidia tech stack will debut within the decade, and “then of course the technology can go beyond that.” That timeline suggests Volvo is taking a measured approach, ensuring the hands-free automated driving system is ready for real-world conditions before rolling it out broadly.

Bringing the Tech to More Than EVs

While Volvo’s relationship with Nvidia isn’t new, the expanded partnership represents the automaker’s effort to bring the latest automated driving software to all of its vehicles — not just its EVs.

All of Volvo’s battery-electric vehicles use Nvidia’s Orin computer chip, which processes information from cameras, radar, and other sensors to help a vehicle understand its surroundings and make driving decisions.

“What we’re going to do in the future is actually standardize more on Hyperion — also from a sensor set perspective — to really open up the stack for the wider partnership with Nvidia,” Bakkenes said.

That standardization matters because it means the same core technology can scale across different powertrains. Whether a driver chooses a fully electric Volvo, a plug-in hybrid, or a gas-powered model, the hands-free automated driving experience could remain consistent.

Why This Partnership Matters

The deal signals a broader shift in how automakers approach autonomy. Rather than building every component in-house, Volvo is leaning on Nvidia’s expertise in AI computing and sensor architecture while contributing its own safety engineering and vehicle integration knowledge.

For Nvidia, the expanded partnership deepens its footprint in the automotive sector. The company’s Hyperion, Alpamayo, and Halos technologies are designed to work together as a cohesive platform, giving automakers a faster path to deploying advanced driver assistance and automated driving features.

For Volvo, the payoff could be significant. Hands-free automated driving remains one of the most sought-after capabilities in modern vehicles, and delivering a system that works reliably on both urban streets and highways would be a major competitive advantage.

Volvo has not said exactly when the first vehicle with the new Nvidia stack will arrive, only that it will debut within the decade. The automaker also hasn’t confirmed pricing or which models will get the technology first.

What is clear is that Volvo views this as a long-term play. By standardizing on Nvidia’s Hyperion architecture and integrating the Alpamayo and Halos layers, the company is laying the groundwork for a hands-free automated driving system that can evolve over time.

As Bakkenes put it, the technology “can go beyond” the first vehicle that uses it. That suggests Volvo sees this partnership not as a one-off project, but as the foundation for its autonomous driving strategy going forward.
