The Waymo $5B loan from a group of high-profile lenders marks the autonomous vehicle company’s first-ever debt financing. The funding arrives as Waymo accelerates its commercial robotaxi expansion across the United States, Europe, and Japan.

Waymo, the autonomous vehicle technology company under Google parent Alphabet, closed the loan with participation from PIMCO, Blackstone, and Sixth Street. Other lenders include Capital Group, Loomis Sayles, T. Rowe Price, Apollo, Blue Owl, Diameter Capital Partners, Franklin Templeton, Fidelity Management & Research Company, HPS Investment Partners, and Oaktree. Goldman Sachs served as the sole lead bookrunner.

The company described the debt financing as an important step in its evolution into a “scaling commercial enterprise.”

Why Waymo Took on Debt Financing

A Waymo spokesperson said the financing will give the company financial flexibility to strengthen its balance sheet. It also positions Waymo to “capitalize on the significant opportunities ahead, especially as a scaling business with proven commercial demand and improved road safety outcomes in the communities in which we operate.”

Until now, Waymo relied on capital from its parent company and outside investors. In February, Waymo raised $16 billion in equity from investors, pushing its valuation to $126 billion. Dragoneer Investment Group, DST Global, and Sequoia Capital led that funding round, with Alphabet maintaining its position as majority investor.

The company’s earlier raises include $5.6 billion in a Series C funding round in 2024, $2.5 billion in 2021, and $3.2 billion in 2020. The Waymo $5B loan represents a shift in how the company funds its growth, moving beyond equity alone.

From Google Project to Robotaxi Operator

Waymo began as a self-driving project within Google. The company spent years testing autonomous vehicle technology on public roads in Silicon Valley and the Bay Area, offering occasional public and media demonstrations. In 2016, Waymo expanded to Phoenix, which became its first robotaxi market.

In August 2023, Waymo received the final permit needed to operate a robotaxi service and charge for rides in California. That milestone kicked off a more aggressive commercial playbook.

Since then, Waymo has launched in multiple California cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and more recently San Diego. It has also brought its robotaxi service to Austin, Dallas, and Houston in Texas, along with Miami, Orlando, and Tampa in Florida. Waymo now offers robotaxi services in 15 markets.

Global Expansion Plans

Waymo is also pursuing international growth. The company is testing in London and Tokyo and plans to launch commercial services in both cities.

The Waymo $5B loan gives the company additional resources as it pushes into new markets. Waymo has described its expansion as a key part of its transition into a scaling commercial enterprise with proven demand.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Waymo’s rapid growth has drawn increased attention from regulators. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation opened an investigation into illegal behavior by Waymo robotaxis around school buses.

The federal safety regulator also launched an investigation after a Waymo robotaxi hit a child near a school. The child sustained minor injuries and was struck at about six miles per hour.

Earlier this year, the National Transportation Safety Board opened its own investigation into Waymo. The inquiry followed reports that its robotaxis illegally passed stopped school buses numerous times in at least two states.

These investigations underscore the challenges Waymo faces as it scales. Safety regulators are watching closely even as the company expands its service footprint.

What the Loan Means for Waymo’s Future

The Waymo $5B loan provides capital without diluting existing shareholders. That matters for a company that has relied heavily on equity funding from Alphabet and outside investors.

The debt financing also signals confidence from major institutional lenders. PIMCO, Blackstone, and the other participants are backing Waymo’s commercial model at a time when autonomous vehicle companies face high development costs and regulatory hurdles.

Waymo’s spokesperson framed the loan as a step toward financial flexibility. With 15 markets in operation, testing underway in London and Tokyo, and plans for further U.S. expansion, the company is positioning itself for the next phase of growth.

For now, the Waymo $5B loan stands as the company’s first debt financing and a notable moment in its evolution from a Google research project into a commercial robotaxi operator.
