ChatGPT Virtual Try-On Changes How You Shop Online

ChatGPT virtual try-on is now available worldwide, and it gives shoppers a new way to see how clothing and accessories might look before buying. OpenAI announced the global launch of two shopping features on Thursday: a virtual try-on tool and a favoriting function that saves products for later.

The update marks OpenAI’s latest effort to make its conversational assistant more useful during the shopping process. The company previously stepped back from an instant checkout feature that did not perform well. The new tools focus on visualization and organization instead of completing purchases.

How ChatGPT Virtual Try-On Works

ChatGPT virtual try-on lets users upload a selfie or a full-body photo to visualize how an item of clothing or an accessory might look on them. The option appears as a new Try On button inside ChatGPT’s shopping results.

You can also upload an image of an item, such as a web screenshot, and ask ChatGPT to try it on for you. This means you are not limited to products already inside the app. If you spot something you like elsewhere, you can bring that image into the conversation and see a preview.

The feature is built on the recently launched ChatGPT Images 2.5 model. OpenAI said this model produces more natural lighting and richer textures, follows editing instructions more reliably, and reduces image generation latency. Those improvements matter for try-on results, where realistic rendering helps shoppers judge whether an item is worth considering.

What the Try On Button Does

The Try On button sits within ChatGPT’s shopping results. When you select it, you provide a photo of yourself and an image of the item. The assistant then generates a preview showing how the piece might look on you.

You can repeat this process with different items and compare results. This makes it easier to narrow down choices without visiting a store or waiting for a delivery to arrive.

Favorites: Save Products for Later

The second new feature, Favorites, lets you save products you discover to a Library inside the app. You can return to these saved items whenever you want. OpenAI noted that saved products will appear alongside your try-on images.

Together, Favorites and try-on create a simple shopping workspace. You can browse, preview, and keep track of items that caught your eye, all within one conversation.

Why Saving Products Matters

Online shopping often involves jumping between tabs, screenshots, and notes. Favorites reduces that clutter by keeping products and previews in one place. If you are comparing several options, having them saved together makes the decision easier.

Other Ways ChatGPT Helps You Shop

OpenAI said ChatGPT supports shopping in additional ways beyond try-on. For example, you could describe a style you would like to try, then ask the assistant to shop for the pieces needed to complete the look.

You could also upload photos of celebrities’ outfits and ask ChatGPT to find the items they are wearing that are available for purchase. This turns the assistant into a discovery tool for fashion inspiration, not just a place to ask questions.

Building a Complete Look

Describing a style and asking ChatGPT to find matching pieces is one of the more practical uses. Instead of searching for individual items, you can start with a vision and let the assistant assemble the components.

This approach works well for occasions where you know the vibe you want but not the specific pieces. A few prompts can produce a list of items to preview with ChatGPT virtual try-on.

What This Means for Online Shoppers

The features are available globally. If you already use ChatGPT for product research, try-on and Favorites add a visual and organizational layer to that workflow. Here are a few practical tips:

  • Upload a clear photo. Natural lighting and a well-framed selfie or full-body shot produce the most useful preview.

  • Use screenshots for items. If you find a piece you like, upload the image and ask ChatGPT to try it on.

  • Save as you go. Favorites keeps your try-on images and saved products together for easy comparison.

  • Treat previews as guidance. Virtual try-on is a visualization tool, not a guarantee of fit, fabric, or final appearance.

OpenAI’s shopping push reflects a broader shift. AI assistants are moving from answering questions to participating in the shopping journey. The earlier instant checkout experiment did not perform well, so the company adjusted its approach.

The new features lean on visualization and organization rather than checkout. This is a lower-risk way to keep users engaged while they shop. Whether it builds lasting habits will depend on how well the try-on images resemble reality.

For shoppers, the takeaway is simple. ChatGPT virtual try-on is now available worldwide, and it is worth testing the next time you are considering a purchase you cannot try on in person.

Testing It Yourself

Start with an item you already own or one you are curious about. Upload a photo, select Try On, and see how the preview looks. Then save a few options with Favorites and compare them side by side.

The more you use it, the better you will understand where it helps and where it falls short. Like any new tool, it works best when you treat it as one part of your decision, not the whole answer.
