Apple Mail Microsoft 365 Sync: What Mac Users Must Know

If your Apple Mail Microsoft 365 account suddenly stops syncing, you are not alone. Microsoft has begun disabling Exchange Web Services (EWS) by default in Exchange Online, and that change cuts off the protocol Apple’s Mail and Calendar apps on Mac still rely on to sync Microsoft 365 work accounts. For anyone who depends on Apple Mail Microsoft 365 every day, this is a change worth understanding before it disrupts your workflow.

Why the Apple Mail Microsoft 365 Sync Issue Is Happening

The cutoff has been on the cards for a fairly long time. Microsoft stopped adding new features to EWS back in 2018. Then, in 2023, the company announced it would start disabling the protocol in Exchange Online from October 2026. That date has now arrived.

Organizations that have chosen to keep EWS running aren’t affected for now. For everyone else, the cutoff may not happen all at once. In a recently updated post from June, Microsoft described the change as a “phased rollout,” so some Mac users could lose access sooner than others.

It is still possible for IT administrators to restore access. However, Microsoft plans to shut down EWS in Exchange Online permanently on April 1, 2027, and no extensions are currently planned.

What Apple Is Doing to Fix Apple Mail Microsoft 365 Support

Apple is aware of the situation. In an Apple Platform Deployment support document, the company says it is “actively working with Microsoft” to move Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, and Reminders apps on Mac to the newer Microsoft Graph API in a future macOS 27 update.

Except that update hasn’t arrived yet. Apple skipped macOS 27.1 betas entirely, while release notes for the macOS 27.2 betas have yet to make any mention of Graph support. Until Apple ships that support, Apple Mail Microsoft 365 users remain on borrowed time.

Who Is Affected by the Apple Mail Microsoft 365 Change

The change only affects Microsoft’s cloud-hosted email server. Companies that run their own Exchange servers aren’t affected. Neither will iPhone and iPad be impacted, since they use Exchange ActiveSync rather than EWS.

This means the problem is specific to Mac users relying on Apple’s built-in Mail and Calendar apps with a cloud-hosted Microsoft 365 work account. Personal Microsoft accounts and third-party email providers are not part of this change.

Your Options If Apple Mail Microsoft 365 Stops Syncing

Affected organizations and users have a few realistic paths forward:

  1. Ask IT to keep EWS running. Administrators can still restore access for now, which buys time until Apple adds Graph support.

  2. Switch to a Graph-compatible client. Microsoft’s Outlook app works with the newer API and will keep your work account connected.

  3. Wait for Apple’s macOS 27 update. Apple says it is working on Graph support, but no release date has been confirmed.

If your Apple Mail Microsoft 365 account stops syncing, don’t assume your messages are gone. The issue is about the sync protocol, not your data. Your email still lives on Microsoft’s servers.

Why This Matters for Mac Users

For years, Apple Mail Microsoft 365 users have enjoyed a simple setup: add a work account, and Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, and Reminders all stay in sync. EWS made that possible. Moving to Microsoft Graph requires Apple to rebuild parts of how these apps talk to Microsoft’s servers.

That work takes time, and Apple has not yet shipped it. As a result, some Mac users may find their work email, calendar, and contacts stop updating in Apple’s built-in apps long before the permanent April 2027 shutdown.

What to Watch For Next

Keep an eye on macOS 27 beta release notes for any mention of Microsoft Graph support. Apple has not confirmed a timeline, and the macOS 27.2 betas have not addressed it so far. IT administrators should also watch Microsoft’s guidance on EWS, since the phased rollout means access could change without much warning.

The Bottom Line on Apple Mail Microsoft 365

The EWS shutdown is a long-planned move that Apple has not fully caught up with yet. Until Apple ships Microsoft Graph support in macOS 27, some Apple Mail Microsoft 365 users may lose sync in Apple’s built-in apps. Administrators can buy time by keeping EWS running, but the permanent shutdown date of April 1, 2027, is already on the calendar.

For now, the safest path for affected users is to either work with IT to restore EWS access or switch to a Graph-compatible client like Outlook until Apple’s update arrives. Staying informed is the best way to avoid surprise disruptions to your work email.
