Google is now testing a feature that lets Gemini call businesses on your behalf. Called “Call for Me,” the tool is designed to handle real-world phone tasks, from checking stock at a local store to booking a restaurant table.

The feature builds on years of Google experiments with AI-assisted calling, but this version goes further by allowing Gemini to share personal information you approve and take a broader set of actions during the call.

What Is Call for Me?

“Call for Me” is a Gemini feature that places phone calls directly from your phone using your own personal number. Once the call connects, the AI can introduce itself, navigate automated phone menus, wait on hold, and handle the conversation on the other end.

Google says the AI can manage complex tasks, including:

  • Calling a store to ask if a product is in stock

  • Making a restaurant reservation

  • Moving a scheduled appointment to a different date

  • Placing items on hold

Users can follow the call as it happens through a live transcript of the conversation and take over at any time.

Who Can Use It Right Now?

The rollout is starting small. “Call for Me” will initially be available to Pixel 11 owners who pay for a Gemini subscription in the U.S. It also requires the beta version of Google’s Phone app for Android, since Google is still treating the feature as an experiment.

Google said it is starting at a small scale because “real-world conversations are nuanced,” and it needs time to get the feature right before rolling it out more broadly.

How It Fits Into Google’s AI Calling History

Google has long offered calling features guided by AI, but prior versions were limited in what they could do. The launch builds on years of experiments with AI-assisted, automated calling technology.

Years ago, the company impressed audiences at its I/O developer conference when it demonstrated Google Assistant calling a salon to make a reservation, even adding little “umm’s” and “ahh’s” to make the conversation seem natural.

Last year, Google rolled out “Ask for Me,” a feature that let Gemini call businesses on users’ behalf to inquire about things like pricing or services. Pixel smartphone owners have also had access to features like “Hold for Me” and “Talk to a Live Rep,” which can navigate phone trees and wait on hold until a real person comes to the line. Another option, “Direct My Call,” can display the numbers to navigate IVR systems.

What Makes This Version Different

While earlier tools focused on narrow tasks like waiting on hold or gathering basic information, “Call for Me” is designed to take action. Gemini can share personal information that you approve as part of the calls it makes, which Google says will allow it to take a broader set of actions.

That shift matters for anyone who has ever spent time on hold or struggled through a phone tree just to confirm a store has an item in stock. The ability to watch a live transcript and jump in at any point also gives users a layer of control that earlier automated calling tools did not offer.

Why Google Is Starting Small

Google said it is starting this experiment at a small scale because “real-world conversations are nuanced,” and it needs time to get the feature right before rolling it out more broadly. The company has not announced a timeline for a wider release.

The feature’s dependence on Pixel 11 hardware, a Gemini subscription, and beta software means most users will not have access immediately. For Google, the limited rollout is a way to gather feedback and refine the experience before a larger launch.

What This Means for Everyday Users

For anyone who has spent time on hold or struggled through a phone tree just to confirm a store has an item in stock, “Call for Me” points to a future where the assistant handles those tasks. The ability to watch a live transcript and jump in at any point also gives users a layer of control that earlier automated calling tools did not offer.

The feature is not just about convenience. It also shows how AI assistants are moving from answering questions to completing tasks that once required a human voice. Whether that shift saves time or creates new frustrations will depend on how well the AI handles the nuance of real conversations.

“Call for Me” is still an experiment, but it signals where Google wants Gemini to go. Instead of just providing information, the assistant is being trained to pick up the phone and get things done. For now, only a small group of users can try it. If the test goes well, more people may soon have an AI that can make calls for them.
