Anthropic Biology Lab Confirms It Runs Physical Experiments

Anthropic operates a wet biology lab in the Bay Area where it uses its AI models to run physical experiments. The company confirmed the Anthropic biology lab to TechCrunch, marking a significant step for an AI developer moving into hands-on scientific research.

The facility lets Anthropic test biological theories in real life rather than only in simulation. That shift matters because AI leaders have spent years promising that their models could help cure human disease. Proving those claims requires a way to test them outside the digital world.

How the Lab Operates

Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, said the facility functions much like a typical biotech lab. Anthropic runs some research internally while also working with external partners.

“We believe that to do biology, the final test is still, and will be for a while, in real lab work,” Kauderer-Abrams said. “We absolutely are doing that today.”

Anthropic declined to share specifics about current projects. It did say the main focus is fundamental biology, not drug discovery. That distinction helps the company avoid appearing to compete with pharmaceutical firms that rely on its models.

The Coefficient Bio Acquisition

The lab’s existence follows Anthropic’s April acquisition of Coefficient Bio, a stealth AI biotech company. That deal gave Anthropic both the infrastructure and the scientific talent needed to run physical experiments.

The purchase fits a broader push into life sciences. Anthropic has been steadily expanding its presence in the sector, positioning itself as a partner to researchers and drug developers rather than a rival.

Careful Positioning Against Pharma

Anthropic has numerous major customers and partners in the pharmaceutical industry. It does not want to give the appearance of competing with them. The company has already faced backlash for launching products that customers perceived as competitive.

Recent partnership: Anthropic announced a deal to work with Novo Nordisk on joint drug discovery. That collaboration reinforces its stated role as a technology partner, not a pharmaceutical competitor.

Life Sciences Verification Program

Anthropic also launched a Life Sciences Verification Program. The initiative gives vetted bio researchers access to its most powerful models. It is designed to support the scientific community while keeping appropriate safeguards around advanced AI capabilities.

The company has published recent reports on research supporting drug discovery. These include work on accelerating protein design and on uplifting biomolecular modeling. Together, they show that Anthropic’s life sciences ambitions extend beyond a single lab.

The Safety Paradox

The lab’s existence has drawn attention for reasons beyond science. It sits in sharp contrast to Anthropic’s own increasingly urgent warnings about AI risk.

The world is still processing the resignation of Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who warned that “the people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.” Anthropic’s own alignment lead has put the odds at greater than 10% that AI could exterminate humanity within the next decade.

CEO Dario Amodei has repeatedly called bioterrorism one of AI’s biggest risks. Last weekend, he published a post calling on the industry to slow down and institute self-regulation.

At the same time, Amodei has made ambitious promises about AI’s potential to cure disease. Just last week, he said: “I believe that AI could cure most major diseases in the next 5–10 years.” To achieve that, a large language model would need methods to test its theories in real life. That is precisely what a wet lab provides.

Industry Reaction

The juxtaposition of dire warnings and a physical biology lab has not gone unnoticed. Investor and AI coding startup founder Chamath Palihapitiya posted on X, somewhat tongue in cheek:

“The group behind such hits as: ‘We’re All Going To Die’ and ‘Regulate Me Now’ are building a wet lab in SF. I do not recommend this.”

The comment captures the tension many in the tech industry feel. Anthropic is asking the world to take AI existential risk seriously while expanding its footprint in one of the most sensitive domains AI touches.

What This Means for the Industry

The Anthropic biology lab represents a broader trend. AI companies are no longer content to build models and let others apply them. They are moving into the physical sciences, running experiments, and generating their own data.

For biotech and pharma, this creates both opportunity and uncertainty. Anthropic’s models could accelerate research in meaningful ways. But its move into wet lab work raises questions about where the line between partner and competitor actually sits.

For now, Anthropic is emphasizing collaboration. The Life Sciences Verification Program, the Novo Nordisk deal, and the stated focus on fundamental biology all point to a company trying to expand its reach without alienating the industry it wants to serve.

Whether that balance holds will depend on what the lab produces — and how Anthropic reconciles its disease-curing ambitions with its own warnings about the technology’s dangers.
