Instacart is the latest app to bake a conversational assistant into its platform. The company announced on Wednesday that it is launching a new AI grocery shopping assistant called Clementine that can turn a conversation, grocery list, or recipe into a ready-to-buy cart. With this tool, users can decide what to make for dinner, simplify grocery shopping, and stay on budget.

According to the company, users can ask the assistant queries like, “I need a week of budget-friendly kids’ lunches,” “high-protein, easy dinners for two,” or “order my usuals.” The AI grocery shopping assistant is now available in the U.S. and Canada.

What Clementine Can Do

Instacart says Clementine can generate personalized recipes or surface ones from trusted publishers. It also tailors recommendations to each household’s preferences, including dietary needs such as gluten-free, vegetarian, nut-free, or organic options.

The AI grocery shopping assistant will also surface relevant deals and promotions while suggesting lower-cost alternatives. Additionally, users can upload a photo of a handwritten grocery list or a screenshot of a digital one, and Clementine can turn it into a cart.

This range of features shows that Instacart wants Clementine to handle far more than simple reordering. The assistant is designed to sit at the center of the household shopping routine, from the moment someone wonders what to cook to the moment the order is placed.

Why Instacart Built an AI Grocery Shopping Assistant

Instacart isn’t the only delivery app using AI to simplify grocery shopping for users. Uber Eats and DoorDash have both introduced similar assistants that can turn natural-language requests and grocery lists into personalized carts.

The launch of these assistants indicates that delivery apps no longer just want to be places where people find and buy groceries. They also want to be where people make decisions before a purchase. These platforms are now competing not only on delivery speed and variety, but also on becoming the default planning tool for households when it comes to grocery shopping.

Additionally, they’re looking to keep users in their own apps for grocery and meal planning, rather than having them turn to popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT. That shift matters because the app that helps a household decide what to eat is also the app that gets the order.

The Vision Behind Clementine

Chris Rogers, CEO of Instacart, framed the launch around a familiar household problem. “Every night, millions of families ask the same question: ‘What’s for dinner?'” he said in an emailed press release.

“Not knowing the answer, let alone what to shop for, is one of the most universal human experiences, and a problem Instacart is built to solve,” Rogers added. “We’ve spent nearly 15 years learning how families shop and eat, and Clementine puts that knowledge to work.”

That quote points to the core pitch behind the AI grocery shopping assistant. Instacart is leaning on its history with household shopping data to make recommendations feel personal rather than generic.

How the AI Grocery Shopping Assistant Fits a Bigger Trend

The race to build a capable AI grocery shopping assistant reflects a broader change in how delivery apps see themselves. Speed and selection used to be the main selling points. Now, the planning phase before a purchase is becoming just as important.

For shoppers, that could mean less time spent bouncing between a recipe site, a notes app, and a delivery app. For the platforms, it means more chances to keep a user inside one ecosystem from planning through checkout.
