The Surprising Origin of the Apple Vision Pro Name

When Apple unveiled its mixed-reality headset at WWDC 2023, the world learned it as Vision Pro. But the Apple Vision Pro name almost told a very different story. For a significant portion of development, Apple’s first spatial computer was internally called “Reality Pro.”

According to prototype collector and leaker Kosutami, the Apple Vision Pro name was a late-stage decision. In a post on X, Kosutami revealed that the device was originally called “Reality Pro” during early development, pointing to an internal string, “realityprorealityosdev,” as evidence that the old moniker persisted in internal builds even after the branding change.

The “Reality” Branding That Almost Stuck

The “Reality Pro” name isn’t new to those who follow Apple’s product development closely. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported back in September 2022 that Apple’s first headset would likely launch as “Apple Reality Pro.” This speculation was fueled by a series of trademark filings that surfaced in August 2022 for “Reality One,” “Reality Pro,” and “Reality Processor” in the United States and other countries.

These filings were strategically submitted through a shell company called Immersive Health Solutions LLC—a tactic Apple has previously employed to keep upcoming product names confidential. This followed an earlier trademark application for “realityOS” dated December 2021, filed by another apparent shell company, Realityo Systems LLC. Developers had already spotted “realityOS” references within Apple’s own software and App Store upload logs, further confirming the company’s initial direction.

By mid-2023, additional trademark activity surfaced for terms like “xrOS,” “xrProOS,” “realityproOS,” and “realOS,” indicating that Apple was exploring multiple naming options before settling on its final choice.

Why Apple Chose Vision Pro Over Reality Pro

Despite the extensive trademark groundwork for the “Reality” branding, Apple ultimately unveiled the headset as the Apple Vision Pro name we know today at WWDC 2023. The company seemingly dropped the Reality branding entirely for both the device and its operating system, which shipped as visionOS.

The switch came remarkably late in the development cycle—so late that traces of the old naming convention, like the “realityprorealityosdev” string highlighted by Kosutami, remained in internal software builds. This suggests that the decision to rebrand was made relatively close to the public announcement, potentially for strategic or marketing reasons.

The Apple Vision Pro name better encapsulates Apple’s vision for the device as a platform for spatial computing, rather than just another virtual or augmented reality headset. It emphasizes the user’s vision and the product’s role in enhancing how we see and interact with digital content.

The Reality Pro Trademark Could Still Matter

Apple reportedly retains trademark rights to “Reality Pro” and “Reality One,” and these could prove valuable in the future. The company faces a unique challenge in China, where Huawei holds a ten-year license to the “Vision Pro” trademark until 2031. This means Apple cannot sell the device under the Apple Vision Pro name in China for the foreseeable future.

Mark Gurman has suggested that Apple could fall back on the “Reality Pro” branding in markets where “Vision Pro” is unavailable as a trademark. This strategic backup plan ensures Apple can still enter key markets without being blocked by trademark disputes, even if it means using a name the company ultimately decided against in most regions.

The Current State of the Apple Vision Pro

The Apple Vision Pro name may be what consumers know, but the product itself has faced challenges since its launch. The device launched in the U.S. in February 2024 at a premium price point of $3,499. Apple recently laid off around 100 members of its Vision Products Group and largely shut down its Vision Pro gaming and immersive video teams.

These cuts follow reports that Apple has effectively shelved the product line, having already canceled both a redesigned Vision Pro 2 and the cheaper “Vision Air” model. The company’s attention appears to be shifting toward smart glasses instead, though the Vision Pro remains a foundational step in Apple’s spatial computing journey.

Lessons from the Vision Pro Naming Story

The story behind the Apple Vision Pro name offers a fascinating glimpse into Apple’s product development process. It shows how even a company known for its meticulous attention to detail can wrestle with branding decisions until the very last moment.

The shift from “Reality Pro” to “Vision Pro” represents a subtle but significant change in how Apple wants consumers to perceive the product. “Reality Pro” suggests a device that processes or enhances reality, while “Vision Pro” implies a device that expands what you can see and do. The Apple Vision Pro name ultimately chosen reflects a broader ambition for the category.

Whether the headset becomes a long-term success or a footnote in tech history, the naming journey from Reality Pro to the Apple Vision Pro name will remain an intriguing chapter in Apple’s storied product development history.
