Google Gives Publishers a Tool to Combat AI-Driven Traffic Declines

As AI continues to reshape search and reduce website traffic, Google has introduced a new feature aimed at helping publishers regain visibility. On Thursday, the tech giant announced the rollout of an interactive Preferred Sources button that publishers can embed on their websites. This button allows readers to easily indicate a publication is a source they want to see more often across Google Search, Discover, and Google News.

The move comes as publishers face mounting challenges from AI-powered search features. With AI Overviews and AI Mode now prominent in search results, many content creators have seen significant declines in referral traffic. Google’s new tool is an attempt to balance user convenience with publisher needs, offering a clear way for readers to support the sites they trust.

How the Preferred Sources Button Works

The Preferred Sources button enables users to select a site as a favorite with a single click. Once embedded on a publisher’s website, readers can press the button to add that source to their personal preferences within Google’s ecosystem. This action signals to Google’s algorithms that the reader values content from that publisher.

Since its initial launch in May 2026, Google has offered the Preferred Sources option in AI Mode, AI Overviews, and Top Stories. Now, with the button available for embedding, publishers can collect these preferences directly from their audience. Google reported that across the web, users have already selected over 345,000 unique sources through this preference system.

Readers can also manually add favorite sources through Google’s source preferences page by searching for a publisher by name or website.

Driving Traffic and Rebuilding Trust

Google’s data suggests that being selected as a preferred source has tangible benefits. In earlier studies, people were found to be twice as likely to click through to a preferred source when it appeared in search results or news feeds. For publishers struggling with AI-induced traffic losses, this new functionality offers a way to maintain audience engagement and visibility.

The Preferred Sources button is designed to build a direct connection between readers and publishers, bypassing some of the disruption caused by algorithmic changes. It reflects Google’s acknowledgment that publisher sustainability depends on trust and direct user feedback.

More Personalization Features for Readers

Alongside the publisher button, Google is expanding personalization across its platforms. Readers will soon be able to customize their Discover feed in the Google app using plain language. By tapping a three-dot menu, users can tell Google what topics they want to see more or less of, and the feed adjusts in real time.

This move aligns with broader industry trends. Many social media platforms have recently introduced similar user-controlled algorithms, empowering individuals to refine their content recommendations. Android users will also gain the ability to customize their audio daily briefings in the Google News app, adding another layer of tailored news consumption.

Why This Matters for Publishers

The launch of the Preferred Sources button arrives at a critical time. Media and entertainment businesses have experienced significant disruption as AI-based systems change how information is discovered and accessed. By giving readers a way to vote for their favorite publishers, Google is creating a mechanism that prioritizes quality and trust.

For publishers, this is a practical opportunity to reinforce brand loyalty and increase referral traffic. The button serves as a direct call to action for loyal readers, encouraging them to signal their preferences to Google. This, in turn, can help offset traffic losses caused by the rise of AI-driven summaries and overviews.

The Future of AI and Publisher Relationships

Google’s move reflects an ongoing effort to balance innovation with ecosystem health. While AI features are likely to remain central to search, the Preferred Sources button shows a willingness to incorporate publisher feedback and user preferences into the system. It creates a feedback loop where reader trust can influence algorithmic visibility.

Publishers who embrace this tool early may gain a competitive advantage. As Google continues to refine how it integrates AI and human preference, having a base of users who actively select a site as a favorite could become increasingly valuable.

The button is now available for online publishers to embed, offering a straightforward way to combat AI-driven traffic shifts. Combined with expanded personalization features for users, this represents a significant step toward preserving a diverse and trusted web ecosystem.
