Groq has announced a new Groq funding round of $350 million** as the company continues its strategic pivot from an AI chipmaker to a neocloud provider. This **Groq funding round** is led by investment firm Disruptive, with planned participation from Nvidia. The fresh capital comes just months after the startup raised a **$650 million round in June to kick off its transition.

The Groq funding round values the company at $3.5 billion**. This is a decrease from the **$6.9 billion valuation Groq held last September, shortly before Nvidia hired the startup’s founder and former CEO, Jonathan Ross, along with other top talent. Those hires were part of a $20 billion licensing deal that the company paid out to investors. A company spokesperson told TechCrunch that despite the lower valuation, Groq does not consider it a down round, framing it instead as a new valuation for the “post-Nvidia-licensing-deal version of Groq.”

The Shift From LPUs to Nvidia-Powered Clouds

Groq was originally focused on building its own chips, called LPUs (language processing units), to compete directly with Nvidia on inference—the computing power required to run AI workloads in real-time. After losing its star team, the company pivoted from being a pure-play chipmaker into a cloud and data center provider that operates Nvidia systems.

Today, Groq operates 13 data centers across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific, serving more than 6 million developers, enterprises, and AI-native companies. With the new Groq funding round, the company intends to scale its capacity from 54 megawatts to more than 200 megawatts by 2027.

The Neocloud Business Model and Its Challenges

“We are building Groq into the world’s leading AI inference cloud,” said Alex Davis, Groq’s chairman and CEO of Disruptive, in a statement. “Inference will without a doubt become the largest and most critical layer of AI infrastructure.”

While inference is in high demand as enterprises scale AI workloads, it remains an open question whether neoclouds will be profitable enough to provide returns on their considerable investment. CoreWeave, for example, reported strong second-quarter revenue growth and recently landed major contracts with Meta and Anthropic. However, investors remain concerned about the company’s high capital expenditures, heavy reliance on debt, and exposure to rapidly depreciating hardware.

Groq’s Position in the AI Infrastructure Ecosystem

Groq’s financials remain private, but the company’s pivot places it directly inside Nvidia’s AI infrastructure ecosystem. This is not a unique relationship among neoclouds today. Nvidia supplies the GPUs powering clouds from CoreWeave, Lambda, and Nebius, while also investing billions into those companies as they race to build more capacity.

This latest Groq funding round demonstrates continued investor confidence in the company’s new direction. The involvement of Nvidia as a participant suggests a sustained strategic alignment between the two companies, even after the licensing deal and talent acquisition.
