Waymo May Offer Self-Driving Cars for Personal Ownership in the Future
Waymo, the autonomous vehicle division of Alphabet, may soon offer self-driving cars for personal ownership, according to a statement made by Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. During a recent earnings call, Pichai shared that Waymo is exploring long-term options for expanding its business model. While the company continues to focus on expanding partnerships with companies like Moove in Miami and Uber in Austin (and soon Atlanta), Pichai mentioned "future optionality around personal ownership" as a potential avenue. This idea of offering self-driving cars for personal use is not a new one for Waymo. Back in 2018, the company entered a partnership with Chrysler to build self-driving Pacifica minivans, setting the stage for future discussions on selling these autonomous vehicles to private owners.

Waymo’s vehicles are equipped with advanced lidar technology, giving them a technological edge in the autonomous vehicle market. This is in stark contrast to other companies, such as Tesla, which are developing their own robotaxi fleets. While Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated that his company plans to sell "Cybercabs" for around $30,000 by 2026, Waymo’s vehicles are typically more expensive due to their reliance on lidar sensors, which offer greater accuracy for navigation in complex environments. Tesla’s robotaxi, which is expected to seat two passengers and use camera vision for navigation, is designed to be more affordable but lacks the advanced sensors found in Waymo’s Jaguar I-Pace EVs, a popular model for Waymo’s autonomous fleet.
The Road Ahead for Autonomous Cars: Waymo vs. Tesla
When it comes to operational robotaxis, Waymo currently has the upper hand. The company has already deployed a substantial number of autonomous vehicles on the road, including in international markets like Japan. In comparison, Tesla has yet to launch any of its own robotaxis, though Musk has promised that millions of autonomous Teslas will be active by the end of next year. While Tesla is focusing on a more cost-effective approach to robotaxis, Waymo’s commitment to premium sensors like lidar positions it as a leading player in the autonomous vehicle sector.
The Future of Autonomous Vehicle Ownership: What to Expect
As the market for self-driving cars grows, companies like Waymo and Tesla are paving the way for a future where personal ownership of autonomous vehicles could become a reality. With advancements in technology and growing demand for safer, more efficient transportation options, it’s likely that self-driving cars will play a significant role in the future of personal transportation. For now, Waymo’s expansion into new markets and partnerships will continue, but the potential for individuals to one day own a fully autonomous vehicle is becoming more tangible. Whether you’re interested in Waymo’s lidar-equipped models or Tesla’s more affordable Cybercab, the world of self-driving cars is evolving rapidly, and soon enough, you might be able to own one yourself.
