OpenAI has officially launched its powerful image-generation tool for all ChatGPT users, a major expansion that was previously limited to paid subscribers. CEO Sam Altman confirmed the rollout in a post on X, highlighting the soaring demand for AI-generated images.
Free Access Comes with Limits
While the new image generator is now open to all users, there are some restrictions. Although OpenAI hasn’t specified the exact number, Altman previously mentioned that free-tier users might be limited to generating just three images per day.

The tool has quickly gained popularity, with users leveraging it to create stunning digital artwork, including anime-style illustrations inspired by Studio Ghibli. Alongside this expansion, OpenAI announced a massive $40 billion funding round led by SoftBank, boosting its valuation to $300 billion. Additionally, ChatGPT has now surpassed 500 million weekly active users and 700 million monthly users, solidifying its dominance in the AI space.
