In one disturbing example, a chatbot narrated a sexually explicit scenario to a user posing as a 14-year-old girl. In another, the AI depicted a police officer arresting "John Cena" for statutory rape involving a 17-year-old fan.
These revelations have intensified scrutiny around Meta's AI moderation policies, especially regarding minors' online safety. Despite the shocking findings, a Meta spokesperson defended the company, claiming that the Wall Street Journal’s tests were highly "manufactured" and hypothetical. Meta's internal data showed that only 0.02% of AI interactions with users under 18 involved sexual content within a 30-day monitoring period.
However, facing mounting public pressure, Meta has vowed to strengthen safeguards across its AI platforms.
