Meta is officially bidding farewell to its U.S.-based fact-checking efforts—a move that has stirred up a blend of concern, controversy, and speculation. Starting Monday, no fact-checkers will remain on Meta’s platforms in the United States. That includes Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp.

It coincided with Donald Trump’s inauguration and came shortly after Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg donated $1 million to Trump’s fund. Not long after, Dana White, a vocal Trump supporter and CEO of UFC, was appointed to Meta’s board. These moves weren't random—they point to a strategic realignment that favors less content moderation in favor of "free speech."
Zuckerberg himself emphasized this shift in a company-wide video. “The recent elections feel like a cultural tipping point,” he said, signaling a broader intent to allow more controversial and even harmful content in the name of open dialogue.
But at what cost?
Prioritizing Speech Over Safety
The big concern here is how this change disproportionately affects marginalized groups. According to Meta’s own updated hateful conduct policy, “We do allow allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation,” citing the prevalence of such topics in political and religious discourse. That’s not just chilling—it’s dangerous.
Meta's decision to loosen its moderation policies—especially on topics like immigration, gender identity, and sexuality—gives free rein to bad actors under the guise of "open conversation." These are not neutral changes. They reflect a deliberate pivot that aligns with a very specific ideological agenda.
Replacing Professionals with Community Notes
Meta is now modeling its approach after Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter), shifting to a “Community Notes” system. Instead of trained, paid fact-checkers verifying claims, the company is placing the burden on users themselves. Joel Kaplan, Meta’s chief global affairs officer, confirmed that the first Community Notes will roll out across Facebook, Threads, and Instagram without any penalties for flagged content.
On the surface, this sounds like a democratic approach. But as someone who’s watched misinformation flourish online, I know this model only works when it supplements—not replaces—professional moderation. It’s a cost-cutting move disguised as community empowerment.
Meta's platforms thrive on engagement, and fewer moderation controls mean more sensational content gets surfaced. We’ve already seen the results. One Facebook page manager told ProPublica that the end of fact-checking is “great information,” after spreading a blatantly false claim that ICE pays $750 to report undocumented immigrants.
This isn’t a one-off. It’s the start of a broader trend. And it underscores a fundamental question: Should tech giants be allowed to play both publisher and platform while rolling back safeguards that protect the truth?
Kaplan defended the decision back in January, writing, “It’s not right that things can be said on TV or the floor of Congress, but not on our platforms.” But I think that’s a false equivalence. TV networks and Congress operate under entirely different legal and ethical frameworks. Meta does not.
I believe this shift isn’t just about content moderation—it’s about power. Meta’s leadership is clearly signaling who they want to please and what kind of discourse they want to dominate online. And by eliminating fact-checkers, they’re making a bold statement: truth is no longer a priority—it’s just another point of view.
