Instagram Edits Surpasses 7 Million Downloads in First Week, Outpacing CapCut’s Launch
Looking for the latest news on Instagram Edits downloads? Wondering how Meta's newest video editing app compares to CapCut? Instagram Edits, the brand-new video creation tool from Meta, exploded onto the scene with over 7 million downloads in its first week — a launch that dramatically outperformed CapCut’s initial numbers. Designed for crafting Instagram Reels, Stories, and social content, Instagram Edits is already proving to be a major contender in the short-form video space, offering seamless, ad-free editing and watermark-free exports, making it an attractive choice for creators and marketers alike.

According to fresh data from app intelligence platform Appfigures, Instagram Edits saw approximately 702,900 downloads on iOS devices within just its first two days — about 37 times more than CapCut managed at its debut. Overall, Edits accumulated 7.1 million downloads by the end of its first week, with 1.2 million coming from iOS and 5.9 million from Android users.
While CapCut's 2020 launch was limited to fewer global markets, even a generous adjustment of its early numbers would still leave it far behind Edits’ explosive entry. In the United States alone, Instagram Edits racked up 381,000 downloads in three days, compared to just 3,400 U.S. downloads for CapCut — a staggering 112x advantage for Meta’s new app.
Meta’s Powerhouse Launch Strategy Fuels Growth
Meta’s unparalleled network effect clearly played a pivotal role in Edits’ early success. Riding on Instagram's massive existing user base and tight integration with Reels and Stories, Edits rapidly climbed to the No. 1 spot on the U.S. iPhone App Store in both the Top Overall Apps and Top Non-Game Apps categories on launch day, April 22. Although it slipped slightly to No. 2 by day two and No. 3 by Friday, it maintained its position far ahead of CapCut, which initially ranked No. 14 Overall and No. 10 among non-game apps.
The App Store’s rankings, heavily influenced by download volume and install velocity, indicate that Edits’ momentum could continue, potentially increasing its lifetime user value and drawing in more advertisers looking to target engaged video creators.
Instagram Edits vs. CapCut: Features and Early Creator Feedback
Although Instagram Edits boasts a promising start, it still faces stiff competition in terms of features. Social media marketing expert Lia Haberman reports that creators appreciate Edits’ ease-of-use, ad-free experience, 4K video support, analytics integration, and watermark-free exports — all critical features for professional content creation and digital marketing.
However, CapCut still holds the upper hand when it comes to advanced editing options. Popular among TikTok influencers and marketers, CapCut offers an array of video templates, AI-powered effects, and transition animations that Edits currently lacks. High-value users, particularly those involved in influencer marketing, social media advertising, and short-form video production, will closely watch how Meta evolves Edits to meet their professional needs.
Can Instagram Edits Sustain Its Growth?
While Instagram Edits has successfully disrupted the early-stage video editing market, it must continue to innovate to catch up to CapCut’s enormous user base. Since its 2020 debut, CapCut has accumulated over 1.22 billion downloads worldwide (excluding China), establishing itself as a mainstay tool for video creators across industries.
Monetization may soon enter the picture for Instagram Edits as well. As the app matures, Meta could introduce a premium tier, offering enhanced features for professional users, or integrate ad placements into the platform to capitalize on its growing audience. Such moves could open up new digital advertising and mobile app monetization opportunities — making Instagram Edits an even more lucrative ecosystem for Meta and a hotspot for brands looking to reach highly engaged audiences.
