Eutelsat Gears Up to Challenge Starlink’s Dominance in Ukraine’s Satellite Internet Market

As satellite internet becomes crucial for Ukraine’s communication during ongoing challenges, competition between Eutelsat and SpaceX’s Starlink is heating up. While Starlink has dominated the landscape, Eutelsat, backed by Germany, is making strides to offer an alternative. Here’s a look at the latest developments and what it means for Ukraine.

Eutelsat: A New Player in Ukraine's Satellite Internet Market

For nearly a year, Eutelsat has been providing satellite internet to Ukraine. With the support of the German government, the French satellite network company has rolled out its services through OneWeb. The low-orbiting satellites used by Eutelsat operate similarly to Starlink’s, establishing a competitive alternative for Ukraine’s government and critical infrastructure.

The Growing Demand for Satellite Internet in Ukraine

Ukraine’s need for satellite internet has grown exponentially, especially in the face of Russia’s invasion. With Starlink providing approximately 50,000 terminals across the country, the demand for reliable connectivity is clear. However, with ongoing geopolitical shifts and the uncertainty surrounding the US-Ukraine relationship, the introduction of another satellite provider like Eutelsat could provide a strategic safety net.

Eutelsat’s Plans to Expand Its Satellite Network

Eutelsat is already in talks to rapidly expand its presence in Ukraine. With fewer than 1,000 terminals currently deployed, the company aims to increase that number to 5,000–10,000 terminals in the coming weeks. The financial backing from Germany, and potentially other sources, will be key to making this expansion possible.

The Role of EU in Supporting Eutelsat’s Expansion

In addition to its partnership with Germany, Eutelsat is collaborating with the European Union under the SpaceRISE consortium. This initiative is part of the EU's broader strategy to develop secure satellite constellations like IRIS². This project could become vital for ensuring uninterrupted internet service, especially if political tensions continue to affect Ukraine’s relationships with other countries.

Could Eutelsat Replace Starlink?

While Starlink’s dominance in Ukraine remains unmatched, Eutelsat’s push into the market could be seen as a safeguard against potential service disruptions. With political uncertainties surrounding SpaceX’s involvement in Ukraine, particularly under the Trump administration, having an alternative could be essential for continuity.

As the competition between Eutelsat and SpaceX intensifies, Ukraine’s satellite internet landscape is poised for a shift. With Eutelsat expanding its footprint and the EU’s backing, the country could benefit from greater flexibility and security in its internet connectivity options. Whether Eutelsat can fully replace Starlink remains to be seen, but the race to provide reliable satellite internet in Ukraine is certainly far from over.
