As a founder of an AI-driven startup, I find myself navigating through both excitement and challenges. One of the most thrilling milestones I've reached recently is the success of Artisan, my AI sales agent company, which has raised $25 million in Series A funding. This round was led by Glade Brook Capital, with participation from Y Combinator, HubSpot Ventures, and other key investors. But beyond the funding, there's a fascinating journey of innovation and growth.

Artisan began its journey in Y Combinator’s 2024 winter batch. A year ago, we were fresh off raising $12 million, and this Series A round is a testament to our growth. Our company has evolved significantly since then, with challenges ranging from product development hiccups to navigating market demands.
The "Stop Hiring Humans" Campaign: A Bold Marketing Move
We gained attention early on with our bold "Stop Hiring Humans" campaign. This marketing stunt sparked plenty of reactions, including death threats, but it also helped put us on the map. However, the message behind it wasn’t as aggressive as it seemed.
I don’t genuinely believe AI will fully replace humans in the workforce. Instead, I see AI as a tool to enhance human capabilities. As an AI-powered company, we understand that human labor becomes even more valuable when combined with the right AI. That’s why, despite our campaign, Artisan employs 35 talented individuals and is still hiring more.
The Rise and Fall of AI SDRs: Lessons Learned
Building an AI sales agent wasn’t without its hurdles. The AI sales development representative (AI SDR) market is still young and evolving, with early-stage products sometimes lacking effectiveness. Our first version of Artisan’s AI agent, Ava, had its share of "hallucinations" – mistakes that resulted in poor quality outreach.
However, we’ve spent a year fine-tuning Ava with the help of Anthropic, improving it to the point where it now hallucinates only once in every 10,000 emails. This substantial improvement has helped Artisan scale, now serving 250 companies and reaching $5 million in annual recurring revenue.
New AI Agent Products: Aaron and Aria Are Coming Soon
We are not stopping with Ava. Artisan is working on two new AI agents to address different aspects of sales and business management. Aaron will handle inbound customer messages, while Aria will serve as a meeting manager assistant. Both are set to launch by the end of 2025, furthering our mission to streamline sales and customer management through AI.
Finding the Right Fit for AI in Sales
One of the key lessons we’ve learned at Artisan is that AI SDRs aren’t for everyone. We’ve found that certain industries, like offshore development agencies, aren’t the right fit for our products. Similarly, we’ve had to refine our target audience, focusing on businesses that can truly benefit from AI-powered sales tools.
The sweet spot for us is a 1% response rate to outreach emails. Too many low-quality leads result in wasted time, and too few responses mean our AI agents aren’t as effective. We’ve focused on qualifying customers more thoroughly to ensure success.
Embracing Flexibility with Success-Based Pricing
In response to feedback and industry needs, we’re also piloting a flexible, success-based pricing model with Paid.ai, founded by Manny Medina. This new platform allows customers to pay per response, offering a more adaptable pricing model compared to the traditional long-term contracts.
We believe this aligns better with our mission to only charge customers if they derive value from our products. It’s an approach that builds trust and ensures mutual success.
Artisan’s journey is just beginning, but our commitment to improving AI tools for sales teams is stronger than ever. From refining Ava to introducing new agents like Aaron and Aria, we are shaping the future of sales with AI. And while our "Stop Hiring Humans" campaign may have sparked controversy, it also helped raise awareness about the potential of AI in transforming industries.
As we continue to grow, one thing remains clear: human talent and AI can coexist and complement each other, driving businesses toward more efficient and effective solutions.
